Reviews Summary
Fricska 2.0 is praised for its elevated take on Hungarian classics and its cozy cellar atmosphere. Diners frequently highlight the incredible value of the weekday lunch menu and the friendly, knowledgeable service, with many dishes receiving high marks for preparation and flavor. However, some reviews mention inconsistent service during peak hours and occasional disappointments with specific dishes, like the goulash or fish soup.
"Amazing meal. Every dish was tasty, prepared in an attractive but unpretentious way, with excellent service. I’d eat here every week if I didn’t live half a world away.
Duck, lamb, pork, all perfectly cooked, paired with sauces that enhanced the meat. Wines recommended were great. The whole meal was fantastic. Highly recommend."

"We had an amazing experience dining here. The tasting menu includes some classic Hungarian dishes eleveted to a very sophisticated level. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable about the food and wine options. Although there isn't a vegetarian option for the tasting menu, the staff had no issues in swapping out meat for vegetarian options."

"The place has a very cozy atmosphere, we went there for the lunch menu. The service was incredibly kind and fast, and we could choose between a two- or three-course menu. On the day we visited, there was no vegetarian option available, but the waitress asked the chef to prepare a special main course for me and organized everything perfectly.
Unfortunately, the dessert didn’t meet our expectations, but every other dish was flawless and absolutely delicious. The experience was definitely worth it, and we would love to return!"

The 24 best Budapest restaurants
Hunkering down below street level, Fricska 2.0 – reincarnation of the well-known Fricska, which closed during the pandemic – is a bright cellar restaurant specialising in international and contemporary Hungarian flavours (dishes like fisherman’s soup, beef bone marrow and roasted paprika, and forest mushroom risotto). Lunch is a regularly changing, fixed-price two-/three-course menu (I enjoyed a wonderful venison stew, coupled with chunky triangles of fried bread), while in the evening you can choose between a five-course tasting menu or à la carte options. Note it’s closed Sunday to Tuesday.
Restaurants in Budapest
Pre-COVID, Fricska was a rare example of casual fine dining in Budapest, elevating Hungarian classics in a spacious underground spot on a quiet street in the Jewish district. Two years after it closed, Fricska 2.0 has reemerged to fill a significant void in the city’s dining scene. The menu is concise and constantly evolving—just a few starters and half a dozen mains—but everything is exemplary, unifying fresh local ingredients with haute cuisine techniques.
