What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Gundel Restaurant is lauded for its historical ambiance, exquisite Hungarian cuisine, and attentive service, creating a memorable fine dining experience. While many praise the signature dishes like the Gundel Pancake and the live music, some reviews mention minor service hiccups or high prices for certain dishes.
"My favorite restaurant in Budapest!
After being twice (once in June 2024, and April 2025), I can say this restaurant is unparalleled.
From the start, the service is amazing. The waitstaff greets you, and if you want, you can ask to sit at a table named after someone in particular (famous Hungarian people, as well as pop-culture icons like Madonna, Andrea Bocelli, Brad Pitt, or Angelina Jolie). I asked to sit at the table of Sir Alex Ferguson, and was led directly there!
You can choose between two, three, or four courses, with palette cleansers and table sets like bread, etc.
The sour cherry lemonade is very good and unique! Would definitely try again.
I got the Lamb Soup (10/10- they pour the broth just for you!) and the Chicken Paprikash (9.5/10) for my appetizer and main. Both are served with care.
For dessert, I opted to split two with my dining partner: the Gundel Pancake and World Fair Sponge Cake. The Pancake can be lit on fire in front of you, which I recommend. It is bitter but good. The sponge cake is light but filling.
The service is excellent: we told the waiter offhand we were splitting dessert and were brought the dessert evenly divided in two plates, which is a great example of how to think of your guests in a fine dining experience.
Thank you, and we will be back!"

"Lovely place to have a beautiful dinner. Perfectly situated for a walk to zoo, park area or hero’s square. The traditional but upscale cuisine was very delicious. I’ve decided the Hungarian’s are the best soup makers. It was a nice meal with some service hiccups. The waiter did not have the best grasp of the English language and that was fine, but our glasses of libations were left empty for a while before refilling and our empty serving plates were slow to be taken. A couple of waiters noticing were quick to remedy the young waiter and waitress errors. Live music was divine. Definitely a good choice."

"Every visit to Budapest feels incomplete without a stop at Gundel. The restaurant has preserved its timeless elegance, allowing guests to step back into the refined atmosphere of the early 20th century. The cuisine is exquisite — each dish prepared with care and rich in flavor — and the service is consistently attentive and professional. Prices are very reasonable for the quality offered. Dining here is not only a culinary delight but also a journey into history."
