Kádár Étkezde is celebrated for its authentic, home-style Hungarian-Jewish cuisine, served at incredibly reasonable prices within a charming, time-capsule interior. Diners consistently praise the warm and exceptional customer service, making it a beloved spot for locals and tourists alike seeking a genuine taste of Budapest. While the cash-only policy and the occasional extra charge for table items are noted, the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the delicious food and great value for money.
"Delicious home-style food at very reasonable prices. Highly recommended the "meat soup with noodles" (basically Jewish chicken noodle soup but no meat) and the stuffed cabbage rolls. Keep in mind you have to pay for the sparkling water on the table but it was very cheap. Also waiters seem to rely on tips, you give them their tip directly when paying the bill - this is a CASH ONLY place."

"This is a must visit place if you are in the city. Still with its original interior serving "old school" dishes. Went back twice as I couldn't have enough)) our waitress was outstanding, exceptional customer service and her recommendation was spot on both of the days. The place is open only for lunch and can be very busy make sure that you get there around 12.00. I would recommend this over any restaurant around the area as the food is very tasty, portion size is great and value for money."

"Went here on a food tour, we were served half portions but these were still quite large! The walls show all the famous Hungarians who have dined here and the same family still own and run the place. Great food and can see why it's so popular!"

The restaurant was founded in 1957 and little has changed in terms of the interior style and décor since; there are a real authentic traditional charm and familial warmth here that other restaurants could only hope to come close to replicating, and it has remained as popular as ever with local families and workers at lunchtime.
Where to Eat in Budapest - 10 Best Hungarian Restaurants for Making Food Babies
Kádár Étkezde wasn’t on our radar at all, but we are so glad we found it. It was a friend of ours back in Australia who made the recommendation based on his own dining experience at the very same restaurant more than 20 years ago. It was by far the most traditional of all the restaurants we tried in Budapest, and barely a word of English was spoken – but any difficulties in communication fell by the wayside at first bite.
The most stylish diners in Budapest - English
A classic diner, which is a kind of odd-one-out, as it’s not really a diner but it has the most pre-war-times-like, chatty and appetizing atmosphere. Checked tablecloth (with transparent nylon cover on top to keep it clean), determined but jovial quickness and what’s most important: everything is about the food. The menu is decades old but this is a strong point, as well.

Why I love it: Kádár Étkezde is a true Budapest relic, a tiny, cash-only eatery nestled in the historic Jewish Quarter that feels like it hasn’t changed in decades. They’ve been serving hearty, homestyle Hungarian-Jewish dishes since the 1950s. The atmosphere is unique, like eating in someone’s dining room from a bygone era – a genuine “time-capsule” experience.
