Reviews Summary

Kőleves Kert is praised for its delicious and hearty Hungarian cuisine, friendly and attentive service, and unique, cozy garden atmosphere. While most diners rave about the food and value, a few noted that some dishes were good but not exceptional, and one reviewer mentioned dry chicken. The extensive wine and beer selection is also a significant draw for patrons seeking a relaxed yet quality dining experience.

"Incredible food and service!

We came here for late dinner. The waiters were incredibly nice and friendly. To our surprise, the food was equally amazing! Fresh and tasty, perfect balance of flavors.

Probably one of the best dinners we had in town. I warmly recommend! 🎈"

Héming Zed

"The restaurant had good authentic food. Ample amount for the price. Specifically appreciate the waiter for being very kind and serving us to content. He even offered water and mentioned it's free if needed. In the end he also did recommend the currency to pay by card so that we don't pay more.

Definitely recommend."

Sreejith Rajagopalan

"It is a nice, famous place apparently. It is large and it was very busy on a Thursday night. Beer could be smaller and colder. Food was good but not delicious. The chicken was super cooked and dry. The tapas were tasty. I liked the place but would not recommend or go back."

How to spend a weekend in Budapest

After a spot of lunch at Kőleves, a relaxed restaurant in the Jewish District, settle your stomach with a stroll to the Danube and across the iconic Chain Bridge. Join the funicular railway (the lower carriage has the clearest views) for a trundle up to the medieval quarter. With its cobbled alleys and pastel-coloured burghers' houses, the Castle District oozes romance (although it can also get crowded).

An Epic Underground Pubs Guide for 2025

Before there were ruin bars, Budapest had garden bars, similar in approach and design, just not restricted to four crumbling walls. Kőleves Kert, attached to a restaurant named after a Hungarian fairy tale about an ingenious ‘stone soup’ recipe, evokes the same super-relaxed vibe as that first wave. Its garish furniture and murals help create a party-ready atmosphere,

Koleves is close to Mika both in terms of location and atmosphere. The restaurant of the same name, meaning ‘Stone Soup’ in Hungarian, is a Jewish Quarter mainstay and now, it seems the owners have decided to expand their enterprise, taking over the disused lot next door and creating one of the most appealing outdoor beer gardens in the city. Mulberry trees dangle their branches down over the gravelled garden creating little pockets of shade in which to hide from the summer sun, groups of friends huddle in cosy alcoves around the garden’s perimeter while others laugh raucously and clink glasses at the colourful tables scattered around the courtyard.

9 Excellent Rooftop & Outdoor Bars In Budapest

Bars on the tourist-heavy Kazinczy Street must be taken with a grain of salt, but you can still find worthy places here (rule of thumb: avoid spots emblazoned with "Hungarian goulash" signs). Kőleves Kert, which isn’t to be mistaken with the popular Kőleves restaurant next door, is one of those summertime treasures in the form of a laid-back, all-welcoming outdoor bar. Order at the wooden shed, then trek through the ankle-deep gravel to find yourself an open seat at the colorful tables canopied by overhanging trees.

In the heart of the Jewish Neighborhood in Kazinczy Street, known simply as the street of the ruin pubs in Budapest, you can find Kőleves Kert (Garden of Stone Soup is the literal transition of its name), another indispensable place to get to know in the area. It opened more than a decade ago with its pleasant and spacious patio, and it’s one of my favorite places to have a beer on a warm summer afternoon. Kőleves defines itself as a modern restaurant that offers meals prepared only from bio produce.

Budapest's Best Bars: A Guide to Bar-Hopping in the Hungarian Capital

Another ruin bar, Koleves Kert (Stone Soup Garden) is the reinvention, the next chapter, ruin bar 2.0 if you like, taking things to the next level. It still has the mismatched, slightly chaotic feel, but it’s actually very together and thoughtful, incorporating an excellent restaurant, a lovely open-air pub and even an apartment where you can stay. This is a gorgeous alfresco place for drinks in summer with its laid-back ambience and shabby-chic charm, and even its cute website is a lot of fun.

It seems like the lesson has gotten through, because, in Budapest, the restaurant Kőleves (Hungarian for “stone soup”) does nothing but share goodness (and absolutely does not serve stone soup). Based in the old Jewish district and housed in an old kosher meat factory, with a cosy summer garden, this is a great place to experience traditional Jewish and Hungarian cuisine with a dash of the modern. Try the soups and stews, such as the matzo ball soup or the beany sólent!

While Kőleves may be better known for its ruin bar in the garden, the restaurant in the building next door has earned a steady reputation for its modern twists on Hungarian-Jewish food, like goose broth with matzo ball, Jewish baked beans with egg or goose leg and other local specials. As well as the more traditional dishes, you also have tapas and bites to pick from as well as heartier, more substantial dishes. Location: Kőleves, VII district, Kazinczy street 41.

Top Nosh: Budapest’s best Jewish restaurants - English

Although it is located within a building that once housed a kosher meat-processing plant, Kőleves is a place that adheres to the spirit of Judaic cuisine more than the religious ordinances. This is apparent in the small things, such as the restaurant's refusal to use pork, additives, and aiming for getting and processing ingredients in the most natural ways possible. You can mostly order fish, chicken, vegetable meals, pasta, and desserts here.
