Reviews Summary

Reviewers rave about OX, hailing it as an extraordinary and immersive fine-dining experience. Guests praise the innovative 20-course tasting menu, the intimate speakeasy ambiance, and the use of fresh, local Icelandic ingredients. While the price is high, most agree it's well worth the cost for a truly memorable culinary journey. Service is consistently noted as professional yet warm and friendly.

"Incredible 28-ish course tasting menu in a cleverly designed speakeasy environment. Expect and enjoy communal seating.
Trust me."

Dick Satan

"Fantastic experience from beginning to end. The hidden speakeasy entrance was a fun touch. The decor was fantastic-quirky and eclectic. Wine pairing was top notch. Service was professional, yet friendly and warm. Not an easy feat for a Michelin restaurant. The menu explored the full breadth of Icelandic cuisine, from land to ocean. If you find yourself in Reykjavik, this is a MUST. You do not want to skip it!"

Robert Eversole

"Wow. Wow. Wow. Ox easily made it to my top 5, this restaurant is everything I am looking for in a fine dining experience - farm to table, best of the local produce, with amazing traditional cooking techniques (that geothermal cooked bread!) and delicious dishes. The vibe of the place is grandma's, but elevated, and it feels warm and welcoming. It's not cheap, and they make you choose a drink pairing menu, but their non-alcoholic menu is very unique and most drinks are made in-house. The menu is robust, even for a Michelin starred kitchen, with 20-22 dishes per meal. So overall it was well worth the price. Beautiful experience, don't miss when in Iceland!"

11 Best Restaurants in Reykjavík for 2024 By A Local Expert

While Prohibition may have spurred speakeasy bars in America, Iceland is no stranger to restrictions on alcohol. A strange mixture of puritanical views combined with high taxes and control over access meant that even beer was banned in the country until as recently as 1989. Inspired by chef Þráinn Freyr’s grandmother, who was fondly called Ammadon (amma is grandmother in Icelandic), Amma Don sits a whole level under Laugavegur, the main shopping street, but its restaurant Óx is something to shout about, with delicate small plates, presented beautifully and paired with fantastic wines.

The team has also opened a neighbouring speakeasy-style cocktail bar called Amma Don.
