Reviews Summary

Matur og Drykkur is highly praised for its innovative take on traditional Icelandic cuisine, with many diners highlighting the unique 10-course tasting menu and impeccable service. The restaurant's atmosphere in a historic salt cod factory adds to the unique experience. However, some guests have found the portions to be smaller than expected for the price, and a few have noted inconsistencies in service or flavor balance.

"We went for a 10 course authentic Icelandic taster meal on a Saturday evening. The restaurant itself feels very authentic and in a historical building harbour side. The food really was incredible and I would say on par with Moss restaurant that we had eaten at the night before. Service was very friendly and knowledgeable too. We really did rate it as a great experience and would happily recommend/re visit!!!"

jose cortizo

"We really enjoyed our dishes with flavors we’ve never tasted before! We tried several things for the first time including horse and sheep.

I loved how often they included Angelic as we saw it all over the island during our trip.

Certainly a splurge but we left satisfied and feeling it was worthwhile."

Katie Ziegler Lewis

"We expected more from a Michelin guide restaurant. Even though the food was really good, the portions are borderline rude and offensively small. We paid 300€ for just dinner, because we honestly thought the wine pairing was too expensive, and left the restaurant still hungry. Staff was nice, and dishes are definitely presented very pretty. For reference, everything we ate is in the pictures. The capelin roe (first picture) is the size of my pinky, and the following 3 pictures which are the first three courses are bite size as well, for reference."

The 14 best restaurants in Reykjavik

Located in a 1920s-era salt-fish factory at Grandi – the same building as the Saga Museum – Matur og Drykkur has a convenient harbour location and exudes an appropriately rustic charm, complete with wooden beams and nautical decor that pays homage to the country’s maritime heritage. The ten-course tasting menu similarly pays tribute to the country’s traditional cuisine, albeit with a modern twist; using wild herbs and seaweed and collaborating with local farmers and fishermen, the food here is seasonal but spans dishes such as lamb with fermented moss, herring with rye bread and vegetarian options, with both wine and non-alcoholic pairings available. Staff are particularly welcoming and accommodating, rounding the experience off nicely.

I wound my way down through the little residential streets between the church and Odinsgata Street then turned right and continued down towards the water on Laugavegur Street and its many cafés, restaurants, bars and boutiques. I headed towards Matur og Drykkur (which simply means food and drink), a restaurant that came highly recommended by my friend Marie-Ève and where I had booked for lunch. The luminous space is casual yet eclectically designed, with rustic-looking wooden chairs and tables, a comfortable banquette, vintage lighting fixtures and an open kitchen accentuated by shelves of preserves.

Located in an old salt cod factory by the harbour, Matur og Drykkur's mission is to take traditional Icelandic recipes and give them a modern twist. The restaurant prides itself on scouring traditional cookbooks for recipes to have fun with, leading to such dishes as Icelandic lamb with parsnip puree, spinach, friend potatoes and blueberry sauce, and delectable desserts like chocolate Skyr with fermented orange sorbet and burnt white chocolate. Tasting menus allow you to choose 'From the Land' or 'From the Sea', while vegetarians are also catered for, with 3 or 8-course set menus.

Fine Dining Icelandic Style

Fortunately, there is now a relatively new a place called Matur og Drykkur (Food and Drink) that offers fantastic, and I daresay, adventurous Icelandic themed food. It is located in the increasingly more trendy Grandi area, close to the ice cream shop Valdís and shares a building with the Saga Museum. Interestingly enough, the building used to be a salt fish factory and the restaurant has a wall sized photo from 1929 where weary looking women workers look at the camera and do not look altogether pleased being photographed.

Matur og Drykkur is a new entry into the Nordic Michelin Guide 2017 (alongside Grillio, Gallery and VOX), named after a famous Icelandic cookbook which forms the basis for many of its dishes. In the name of modernity, they spruce up these classic recipes while still staying true to traditional preparation methods. Chef and part-owner Gisli Matthias Auounsson wants to make Icelanders proud of their native cuisine and certainly does so with this simple but highly praised restaurant.
