Founded in 1956 by Shivji V. Kothari, Mocambo is considered to be one of India’s first nightclubs. With bright lights, live music and a glass dance floor, the establishment was a stand-out for its times and was known to be exclusive—a dinner jacket was mandatory for gents. Antonio Prandhe—the chef who originally led the restaurant—was Italian and created a menu with several Italian and European dishes like Sicilian chicken, lasagne, spaghetti with meatballs, cannelloni and vegetable au gratin.

Along with Mocambo, Waldorf and Magnolia, Trincas has witnessed and survived more than half a century of change on Park Street that saw legends like Blue Fox, Sky Room and Waldorf replaced by fast-food outlets. Unlike most competitors down the road, Trincas has been known as much for its music as the continental and Chinese food that it served. It gave Kolkata and the country one of its most enduring musical icons — Usha Uthup.

Bar, Cocktail Bar, Restaurant, Continental, Indian, Cocktails. Though their venue is always low-lit, Mocambo’s menu shines brightly in the Kolkata food scene. They offer Indian, Mughlai and Tandoori food, but their Continental preparations are what really do the trick.

Around the corner from Blue Fox was Mocambo, where Pam Crain made her debut, with its fancy glass dance floor with lights underneath, where the finest have entertained, and which, along with Trincas, was the place to be for teenagers on Sunday for four hours of non-stop dancing to pop groups playing all the latest pop material from The Beatles to the Monkees to Dave Clark Five. Some places featured drag acts, in which some beautiful young man clad as a woman would wait for the music to reach fever pitch before ripping off his bikini top, leaving the audience feeling short-changed. But there was nothing sleazy about all this and a general air of urbane good humouredness prevailed.

Tearoom Flury’s and restaurant Mocambo are iconic for their European flair, while newer spaces offer a more nuanced experience. Raajkutir, an urban resort-style boutique hotel about six kilometers east of Dalhousie Square, offers a distinctive ambience of rajbari, a style of British-influenced architecture adopted by wealthy landowners. And at Jalsa, a new restaurant within the colonial Harrington Mansion, expect stained glass windows and and refurbished interiors that hark back to bygone eras.

Park Street has long been a haven for dining and wining and entertainment for the Calcutta's hip natives, as it has been for visitors from out of town. A hot favourite from back in its glamorous heydays of the 70s, Mocambo is loved for its great atmospherics and hip vibes and memories of crooner Pam Crain. You still have the queues waiting it out for decades-old favourites such as chicken a la Kiev and Beckty Bell Meuniere (seafood dish) at this heritage restaurant.

Following the criteria of having the restaurants for over at least 60 years that are still in operation, the INTACH task group reviewed over 100 outlets. Old heritage has been restored in the walls of various restaurants in different eateries and restaurants. The INTACH has acknowledged 15 exquisite establishments through the initiative, Calcutta Culinary Heritage Trail, to create awareness and pay tribute to their lasting impact on the city’s culinary heritage.

Vir Sanghvi, an Indian journalist and food columnist says, Kolkata in the 70's was regarded as the centre of the universe, with places like Moulin Rouge, Peter Cat, Blue Fox, Mocambo, and Sky Room serving multi-cuisine dishes, in the truest sense of the word. The flavours of European food served in these restaurants were dictated by the cooks, most of whom were Gomes (Portuguese descent) cooks from Calcutta who designed menus for the British Clubs.

The recipe stays faithful to the traditional method where crab meat is taken out from its shell and cooked, followed by the mustard sauce which is used to add a distinct tang. The dance floor may be gone, but the rest of the decor is clearly stuck in a time warp – low hanging silk lampshades, sultry lighting and servers in white uniform with turbans and cummerbunds.

If you are in Park Street, choosing a restaurant to eat at will be difficult because it is dotted with numerous restaurants, and it can be confusing. However, if you don't want to wait in queue for an excessively long time, you should book a table at Mocambo. They have a delightful baked Alaska that is genuinely just the replica of the word "oomph!"; sizzlers that always steal the show; and devilled crab, which is a personal favourite!

At Peter Cat, order the Chello Kebab, a dish which, since its inception in the kitchen here, has become intertwined with the city’s identity.

Mocambo cafe soaked in old world charm through vintage memorabilia, portraits and servers in Raj era uniforms makes me nostalgic about the colonial influences that shaped Kolkata food offerings. Under their red lamp lit interiors, I gorge on continental dishes with Bengali touches like baked fish with mustard dressing as I watch inhouse band belt out classics from the 50s era that the restaurant traces its roots from.

Mocambo is a curious place dressed with red velvet booths and low lighting packed with joyful and classy young Bengalis. This is the place to find items on the ‘Heritage Menu’ – throwbacks to the British Raj. We ate (very slightly) overcooked lobster and chips with the odd bit of pasta thrown in all for £4 but still left thinking we’d come back because the fun atmosphere, service and gin fizzes.

This place serves a combination of Mediterranean, Continental, European and Jewish food at amazing prices. If you are looking for Jewish cuisines, then you will find their Cream of Chicken Spring soup, Asparagus on Toast, Chicken Shashlik, and corn and cheese salad to be highly delightful. Their other special meals include Fish steaks, Deviled crabs, baked Alaska, Risotto, and Lamb.

I have visited Mocambo several times before, but this time I decided to visit with my family and had an absolute blast. The staff's behavior was exceptional, as always, making us feel like royalty. Despite the joint being full on a busy Saturday afternoon, the service was incredibly fast, and we only had to wait for 20 minutes to get in.
