Reviews Summary

Nahoum and Sons is a legendary bakery celebrated for its delicious and unique cakes, especially the Christmas cake and rum balls. While many praise the consistent quality and rich heritage, some reviewers note long waiting times and occasional disappointment with snack items.

"One of the most famous cake shops in Kolkata. This was my first time at Nahoums and honestly it was such a delight. This shop has a variety of cakes and savoury items. I ordered their rum balls ( ₹ 45/ piece ) and it was such an unique amalgamation of flavours. Chocolate and rum ....it was an absolute delight to the taste buds. Would definitely recommend this place."

The RAY Vlogs

"The food quality was actually amazing! The heart cake was simple yet it amazed me so much. It was soft..fluffy and tasty! We had to wait outside as there was a line to enter the shop! It was Friday at 11 pm, still such a rush! The quality has been maintained! Definitely buy their garlic bread too!"

Sathi Banerjee

"This famous bakery located right inside the New Market area has a large selection of pastries, bakes, cakes and sweets. We had gone there in the evening and the whole market was crowded and full of activities. The staff at Nahoum Confectionery were at the peak of their efficiency, catering to the needs of the customers. It is an interesting shop to visit in Kolkata."

Kolkata’s historic diners: 100 years of flavor and heritage

Founded in 1902 by a Baghdadi Jew who came east to seek his fortune, Nahoum’s current winners for me are the baked Cheese Samosas and the crumb fried fish pantras rolls. Not everyone’s favourite, but definitely on my “buy” list, are also lightly sweet, anise-flavoured date cookies that go perfectly with tea and the rather bland Water Biscuits which are irresistible for their natural warm flavour once you start eating them (also good with dips!); Fair warning - the cheese samosas need reheating in an oven, the date filling in the cookies and the fish filling in the pantras are scant, but flavourful and work brilliantly with the textures that encase them.

21 things to know before you go to Kolkata

Nahoum & Sons, inside the sprawling New Market shopping complex, is the city’s last Jewish bakery and its challah bread, fruitcakes, macaroons, and other cakes are popular gifts for Kolkatans to bring to someone’s home. Nahoum & Sons was founded in 1902 by Nahoum Israel Mordecai, a Baghdadi Jew, and in more than a century of trading the original decor remains unchanged. It’s a cherished legacy of the city’s once-thriving Jewish community—which came mostly from Baghdad, but later also from Burma, Europe, and America, during the British Raj.

From Flurys’ swanky digs to a gritty Jewish bakery that has been in existence for over a hundred years, Nahoum & Sons (F20, Bertram St, New Market Area, Taltala; above), housed deep within Lindsay Street’s Hogg Market, is an institution that prides itself on doing things the old way. Their original recipes remain unchanged and the vintage-style display has probably not been upgraded in decades. The city’s Jewish community has since dwindled, but Nahoum’s bakes have found favour with all of Kolkata, and beyond.

Spotlighting some of Calcutta's iconic heritage bakeries

Amidst the bustling crowd and the vibrant cacophony of Hogg Market, this 1916’s vintage Jewish establishment was once selling door-to-door, melting hearts with its Jibben, or the salted cheese snack. With its Italian marble counters and Belgian glass cases, even today, Nahoum’s stands tall with its colonial architecture and the cosmopolitan past. As you push open the glass door, the winter chill fades away and is replaced by the dizzying aroma of freshly-baked bread and memories of simpler times.
