Hospedaria Venite is celebrated for its unique bohemian ambiance, traditional Goan and Portuguese fusion cuisine, and friendly service. Diners rave about the delicious food, the charming old-world feel of the 200-year-old building, and the delightful balcony seating. While overwhelmingly positive, some minor points about batter-to-filling ratios in certain appetizers have been mentioned.

10 Of The Best Restaurants In Goa, India

Hotel Venite popular lunch spot serving traditional Goan vegetable vindaloo and Portuguese inspired chouricos — a spiced sausage — make this place worth a visit. The coconut-skin lamps and slightly rickety balcony tables which look out onto the light pink and pastel colored buildings across the road add to its quirky and off-kilter charm. The walls are covered with graffiti, some of which dates back to when the restaurant first opened in 1955.This restaurant is a great place to sit back and take in Panjim whilst watching the world go by.

Restaurants in Goa

Besides Viva Panjim and Horseshoe, you can enjoy an atmospheric evening at Luiz D'Souza's Hospedaria Venite (31st January Rd., Fontainhas; tel. 0832/242-5537; daily 8:30am-10:30pm), a tiny upstairs restaurant in a 200-year-old building where you can sit on the balcony and order wonderful Goan specialties (or try the delicious shrimp salsa and stuffed crab). The restaurant, which has been going for over 50 years now, features a floor made from wood salvaged from a wrecked Portuguese ship, and in one room the walls are thickly covered with decades of graffiti, amateur artworks and assorted paraphernalia, making this feel like a seriously boho hangout. You can also head across the Mandovi Bridge to Povorim where O'Coquiero's (near Water Tank; tel. 0832/241-7271) has been churning out traditional Goan food for decades (try the squid masala or chicken cafreal).

PANJIM HAS A PARISIAN FEEL THANKS TO ITS CHARMING CAFES

Yours truly has happily flipped between a fish thali at Anand Ashram or a spicy biriyani made by the all women crew at Pakeeza or a pork vindaloo at Venite, with a rucola salad with candied walnuts and feta at Blue Tokai. And if there is a Café Bhosle for puri and mushroom bhaji and sweet tea , there is Carlos Noronha’s very European Caravela ( more about this in a subsequent piece on Panjim’s breakfast journeys), which serves a full and complete English breakfast with beans, hash browns and tomatoes with your bacon eggs and sausage. And yet you could mix the traditional with the modern at the Bombay Coffee roasters at the Old Quarter hostel where a back packers breakfast of toast, eggs and jam, as well as a Goan breakfast of bhaji, pao and samosa procured from the next door traditional café is served.

50 Best Restaurants In Goa That Are A Great Culinary Delight

Located in a 200-year-old building that has these cute balconies overlooking the narrow inner lanes of Panjim, Hotel Venite is a traveller’s delight. What is now only a restaurant used to be a hotel brimming with hippies, from Goa’s early days — a wall full of scribbles and graffiti stands witness to the same, while the flooring is made out of timber salvaged from old Portuguese shipwrecks!. Their mojitos and LIIT are quite #lit, and we’d recommend the Stuffed Crabs and the Bombay Duck Fry.

Enter Venite and you’ll find the place almost always full to capacity with European tourists. The restaurant has built a reputation for serving up the wonderful Continental fare, after all. Rickety tables inlaid with colourful tiles, narrow windows opening out to tiny balconies that seat two, wall-to-wall graffiti and mismatched furniture are some of the elements that give Venite its warm ambiance and cosy charm.
