What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Sego Tempong Mbok Wah is celebrated for its authentic Javanese flavors, particularly its legendary spicy sambal and generous portions that offer excellent value. However, some visitors have noted issues with service during peak times and food freshness on occasion. Despite occasional drawbacks, it remains a popular local recommendation for a taste of Banyuwangi.
"I received a recommendation from a local to try Nasi Tempong Mbok Wah, located not far from the Banyuwangi City train station, and I was pleasantly surprised. The food is perfect for those who don’t like overly sweet flavors. A portion of nasi tempong comes with a generous serving of rice, ikan asin, lalapan, and the highlight—its incredibly flavorful sambal, which is perfect for spice lovers. Additionally, there is a variety of side dishes available, such as fried chicken, tempe, fried egg, and more. The portion sizes are extremely generous, so if you have a smaller appetite, I recommend requesting a smaller serving of rice. The prices are very reasonable for the portion sizes and the delicious taste.
However, the service was less than ideal as the staff seemed a bit unfriendly, possibly due to the late hour when I visited. As for the ambiance, it was decent, though the cleanliness of the hand-washing area could use some improvement"

"Visited Nasi Tempong Mbok Wah during the Eid long holiday and had a disappointing experience. The food was not fresh, already cold when served, and the service was subpar.
The wait in line to order and pay was excessively long. To make matters worse, the food was not freshly prepared. We had to reserve a table while lining up, which added to the frustration. The staff seemed overwhelmed, and at one point, they even yelled at customers for taking too long to order (FYI, they don’t serve written menu).
Parking was also a challenge, with limited spots available. However, there was a helpful parking guide on site.
Overall, I would not recommend Nasi Tempong Mbok Wah due to the poor service and food quality."

Where to eat in Banyuwangi, Indonesia
Sego Tempong M’bok Wah is the “original” sego tempong joint in town. “Sego” is rice in the local dialect and “tempong” means to slap and describes the impact of the spicy sambal that is the mainstay of this dish, a fiery concoction of chilis, tomato and shrimp paste. Here you’ll be served a bowl with rice, cucumber, some greens, a corn and tofu fritter along with a good dollop of sambal and then it’s point and pick for accompanying dishes, mostly seafood and vegetables.

In Javanese, the word sego means ‘rice’ while tempong is the local slang for ‘to slap’ and sego tempong is named so because eating one feels like being slapped in the face. This is courtesy of the chilli sauce used in the dish and as Indonesians never mess around when it comes to their sambal, you know the name means business.
