Bokashi Berawa

We enjoyed our time at Bokashi so much that we actually went back after our shoot, twice. The teahouse houses a gourmet grocery store on the first floor, while the second level features a spacious Japan-inspired dining area complete with tatami mats and wooden flooring. Bokashi offers single-origin Indonesian teas with popular options being the Pearl Classic Oolong (IDR35K/~S$3.14)–a type of tea grown on Mount Halimun with natural jasmine notes—and the White Silver Needle (IDR40K/~S$3.59) from Mount Burangrang, which features light floral aromas.

Bokashi first opened in Canggu’s Berawa as a natural grocer and cafe. With a new larger location and the creative genius of Chef Jethro Vincent, the Pererenan outpost adds a dinner menu and a robata grill that takes classic dishes to new levels – the sweet and sour pork belly skewer is one of the best things we’ve eaten lately. The interiors are rustic and refined; the antique wooden building glows with antique lamps and rugs and offers a terrace at the front and an internal garden.

Not your typical cafe or restaurant, Bokashi is an organic health food store and tea house, but it is an excellent place for lunch with the gals after morning shopping or walking on Berawa Beach. After browsing all the organic produce to take back to your villa, go upstairs, sit, and try the Avocado and Edamame Mash or the breakfast bento. Everyone comes here for the open sandwiches, so make sure you try the salmon rillette or roast beef.

A healthy grocery store and Japanese-inspired cafe & teahouse, Bokashi is all about organic produce, farm-fresh ingredients and an earth-conscious ethos. You’ll know exactly where your food comes from here, because Bokashi’s produce is sourced from their very own organic farm. As for the grocery store, expect the same hyper-local concept, plus bulk goods sold in sustainable or recycled packaging.

Bokashi translates to “fermented organic matter” – meaning nothing goes to waste in this Japanese-inspired tea house. With locations in both Berawa and Pererenan, you’ll need to visit both Bokashi outlets to get a taste of its different specialities. Whichever you visit, Bokashi is a Japanese-inspired tea house that blends refined Japanese flavours with Indonesian soul.

This Japanese-inspired cafe is located atop an organic grocery shop and serves unique, fresh and healthy meals. The cafe sources its ingredients from the organic grocer downstairs. It also sells its own range of oils, butter, pickles and the like under the Bokashi Chef name.

Bokashi is open everyday offering breakfast, lunch and an additional dinner menu. The Bokashi cafe sits atop their store located in Berawa, humbly feeding nearly 30 guests at peak. They wanted to keep it small to deliver quality and build on their brand ethos of simplicity.

This is a cafe cum grocery store which is all about Japanese tastes with local organic ingredients. The menu changes constantly to reflect the changing seasons and the local produce available. It’s a lovely place to eat lunch or breakfast and will leave you wanting more.

Bokashi is one of the top-rated restaurants in Bali that totally surprised me in the best way. The way they blend Japanese and Balinese flavors is genius. I had the miso-glazed pork belly.
