I know when you go on holiday to Bali Mexico is probably the last place you’re thinking you’ll want to be, but Motel Mexicola is an awesomely kitsch Mexican cantina and bar not to be missed. Go early for dinner because even though this place is enormous, it gets packed on the weekends. The feel good factor is fueled by the bright decor, awesome margaritas, beers served super cold and food that is as close to real Mexican as you’ll get in Bali.

Pretty much an incongruity to the list we have going on here but we guarantee it’s a place worth checking out. Upon stepping into Motel Mexicola, it is almost like you’ve truly been whisked away to a true-blue Mexican diner . Almost every inch of the walls are painted or decorated with something, while being furnished in vibrant stools with innumerable frames and tables.

If you’re looking for a taste of Tijuana in Bali, this is the place to get it. ‘More Mexican than the Mexicans’ is an apt way to describe this place, with its shrine to Mother Mary at the entrance and multicolored tiles covering the walls. The food is a close match as well; try fish tacos with chilli mayo along with fritters, burritos and, of course, tequila cocktails.

We already know that a good hunk of Bali's hospitality scene is a transplanted of slice Sydney – Maurice Terzini's got Da Maria, George Gorrow's behind the Slow and Motel Mexicola has ties to Bondi's Bucket List – so it wasn't a huge surprise when we found out Double Bay's Mrs Sippy is the latest export to find a new home in the glitzy Bali neighbourhood of Seminyak.

Grilled pork marinated in axiote with pineapple salsa, deep fried baby corn, blackbean, pico de gallo in a hand made white corn tortilla, Mexican style pork ribs in a secret sauce served with charred corn and a selection of awesome ceviches, ensaladas (try their shredded confit duck with mango, tamarind and cucumber) and tostaditas round up an impressively original menu. The wine list is pretty paltry so Patron Tequila is order of the day over the bar for those that live life without fear of apocalyptic hangovers, whilst mere mortals stick to the Coronas and devilish smoothies.

A word of caution: many people (especially tourists) have experienced being robbed outside the premise of the club by men on motorcycles so be sure to keep your belongings safe and refrain from using your mobile phones whilst standing near the road.

Operating from 9AM to 11PM as a vibrant Latin restaurant before transforming into a lively nightlife destination from 10PM to 1AM, this establishment is centrally situated in the heart of Seminyak. Its visually striking exterior mirrors the essence of a traditional Mexican hacienda, featuring a colourful facade that exudes a vibrant atmosphere reminiscent of Mexico. Binge on classics like guacamole, quesadilla, tacos and tostadas before ordering up bigger plates of aromatic braised duck with green chilli and coriander (carnitas de pato) or braised pork belly with roasted capsicum, tomato, chilli and peanuts (pancita guisada).

I went here twice during my time in Bali, once for lunch so I could get my photo on their oh so extra staircase and another at night for dinner and dancing with the Pangea Dreams girls on our last night together. It was probably the best night out I’ve had in the longest time and not just because all of my Coyote Ugly dreams came true.

Motel Mexicola is one of my favorite places to go out in Seminyak. The owners also walk round at two points every evening just pouring tequila into peoples’ mouths and the décor there really is beautiful.

I was here in 2019 and it was one of the best nights of my life.
