If you’re looking for good Indonesian food, I would highly recommend visiting Ulekan, located on Berawa beach. Ironically, we stumbled upon this place on our second to the last night in Canggu which was a shame as we can only usually get our Indonesian fix from local warungs (which is hardly the best setting for dinners at night!) All the dishes are reasonably priced and were nothing short of delicious!. As it was our last night out, we ordered up a feast sampling their satay, chicken curry, beef cheek rendang, and a few other mixed vegetables.

Ulekan, named after the traditional stone pestle and mortar used by every Indonesian kitchen to make sambal and bumbul, celebrates Bali through its traditional dishes and its admirable efforts to source ingredients locally from small scale farmers and fishermen. The results are sublime: go with a group and order a tonne of dishes to share, because you won’t want to miss out on trying everything here. We recommend the beef rendang – you’ve probably tried this before, but not with such careful spicing and tender meat.

It’s Indonesian cuisine (and plenty of it) that you’ll find on the menu at Ulekan, the open-air restaurant sitting in Berawa. While the lunchtime nasi campur is well worth discussing, it’s the dinner menu which really cements this simple eatery as one of the best restaurants in Canggu. Tuck into traditionally cooked sate (grilled over coffee plantation wood), and curries like rendang sapi, and not forgetting the 4 different sambals on offer.

This lovely restaurant is easily our favorite warung for high-quality local Indonesian food. This place might be pricier than a very local warung, and you´ll mostly see westerns eat here, but you get real quality and atmosphere in return. The whole ambiance is very appealing as well: the interior design is spot on, and you are seated next to a Balinese temple.

If you want some live music with your spicy dishes and, perhaps, some Balinese traditional dancing, then Ulekan should tick the box. This is a very upscale modern dining experience which has very obvious roots in the local warungs.

Besides the food, Ulekan also has a nice & comfy interior decoration, mixed between traditional Balinese & contemporary style. The restaurant in Canggu, Bali is also located in a rather small & quiet street, thus it’s perfect for those who are looking for a quiet place for working or dining.

Ulekan - Delicious Indonesian Street food, I can highly recommend at least 1 meal at Ulekan on your trip to Canggu so that you get to experience the deliviuous Indonesia flavours of fresh turmeric, coconut, satay, rendang….Oh, and don’t leave without getting their Banoffi Pie!

For anyone who wants to explore Indonesian cuisine, the Ulekan is the best place in Canggu. Try the typical dishes made with the rich spices of the archipelago and, if it is on the right day, you can even have your meal accompanied by a Balinese dance performance.

LN Local warungs are best for Indonesian food but if you want to go to a restaurant, Ulekan is an excellent choice. I go there with my Indonesian friends for dinner every week. The sauces and pastes are bursting with local flavours and are super-spicy.

Ulekan, in Indonesian word means a cooking tool that we use to make sambal (paste of spices). By learning this, you know already what they serve. Ulekan Canggu offers a wide range of Indonesian cuisine from all over the archipelago.

Canggu is loaded with endless upscale Western options but what about local Indonesian food?. There aren’t many restaurants in Canggu serving local food in an elevated setting. Ulekan is one of my favorites.
