Nusantara is the sister restaurant to Locavore, once named Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants. While Locavore is a more blockbuster contemporary affair with watertight reservation openings, the more casual Nusantara (Javanese for “archipelago”) showcases the distinct regional tastes of Indonesia. The space is full of woods, traditional print pillows, and rattan partitions, making you feel as though you’re being treated to an Indonesian home-cooked meal.

Another gem from the Locavore team, Nusantara opened its doors in Ubud in 2017. Since then, it’s been bringing joy to tables and happiness to diners. The Balinese chef Putu has created a menu that celebrates the variety of the Indonesian cuisine, through authentic flavors, locally sourced ingredients and traditional recipes.

But I got a reservation at its sister restaurant, Nusantara by Locavore, where I enjoyed a seven-course set menu featuring dishes and ingredients from all over Indonesia, from comforting moringa leaf soup (jukut kelor mesanten) to braised duck (gulai bebek). In case that wasn't enough food, I also got a 'tasting platter' of nine snacks, which I soon polished off. The food was delicious and beautifully presented, as was the gin and kayu manis cocktail I enjoyed.

Traditional Indonesian cuisine prepared in family style using fresh and quality produce is what Nusantara by Locavore is all about. The restaurant focuses on bringing out the local flavors and present lesser known dishes from across the country.The restaurant has a relaxed and casual dining atmosphere with simple decor. Few of their highly recommended dishes include Barbeque Pork Belly, Goat Ribs, Banana Blossoms, Fish Curry, Sambal and refreshing cocktails.

Nusantara, a spin-off of Ubud’s acclaimed restaurant Locavore, serves real Indonesian food from across the archipelago to showcase the country’s rich culinary heritage and distinct flavors. Nusantara, like Locavore, has a cozy and stylish setting and serves exquisite cuisine created entirely of fresh and seasonal ingredients. Without leaving the table, you’ll be able to sample the delectable flavors of West Java, South Sulawesi, and beyond.

The name means archipelago in Bahasa Indonesia, with the venue an ode to the 17,000(ish) islands that make up the nation. Indonesian-only ingredients are employed on the menu which takes its cues from the country’s thousands of differing tribes and cuisines. Expect a journey across the nation through your tastebuds, with hero dishes including the Basa Manis Cemagi (or mud crab) and Lombok’s Ayam Bakar (a much loved chicken dish).

Nusantara is the place to go if you’re looking for high-end Balinese food at affordable prices. We knew this was no simple restaurant as we stepped into its premises, as we were immediately greeted by the enthusiastic staff who ushered us to our table, pulled out our chairs, and laid a napkin on our laps. The restaurant is popular for their Nusantara Set Menu, which costs IDR450K (~S$40.56) per guest.

We were drawn to Nusantara due to its wood-fired grill in the restaurant and interesting sambals and decided to make a dinner reservation to branch out and try one of the other higher end restaurants in Ubud. We had high expectations for our meal due to how nice the setting was, the service, and this delicious appetizer that included krupuk (crackers) with a diverse selection of Indonesian condiments.

Tucked away in Ubud, Nusantara by Locavore is a refined yet relaxed dining destination dedicated entirely to the diverse culinary heritage of Indonesia. Created by the team behind the award-winning Locavore, the restaurant showcases authentic regional recipes from across the archipelago, each thoughtfully prepared using traditional techniques and locally sourced ingredients.

Some must-try traditional Balinese eateries in Ubud include Moksa Ubud, known for their mouthwatering jackfruit tacos, and Nusantara, where you can enjoy the best squid, fish satay, and beef brisket. Don’t miss out on the crispy duck at Bebek Bengil, where you can also indulge in nasi campur Bali, delicious Balinese smoked chicken, and mouth-watering Ayam Kampung Pelalah.

Locavore is a fine-dining restaurant specializing in exquisite and inventive cuisine. The restaurant has a beautiful and elegant setting, with an open kitchen and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating options. You must book ahead to get a table at Nusantara, as it’s one of the most desirable places to eat in the Ubud restaurant scene. Every dish is bursting with authentic flavours and locally sourced ingredients, which are beautifully presented and served in the most inviting atmosphere. It’s the perfect location for a romantic evening meal with somebody truly special.

The restaurant showcases the rich cultural diversity of Indonesian food. Its menu was inspired by the 17,000 islands and 3,000 different types of cuisines within the archipelago. As a true testament to their dedication to Indonesian flavors, they have preserved many traditional cooking techniques and heritage rituals in the preparation of their dishes.

Run by the Locavore team, Nusantara specialises in authentic Indonesian cuisine. The sleek, understated interior lets the food shine and it does. Dishes like ikan bakar dabu-dabu (grilled fish with North Sulawesi sambal) and Gulai Kepala Ikan (fish head curry) highlight regional recipes rarely found on tourist menus.

Another great restaurant that serves Indonesian dishes from all over the archipelago. The cozy atmosphere with colonial inspired interior design only adds to the experience, and so does the lovely open bar. Their menu is intended for sharing and most of their dishes are a bit spicy.

Contemporary Indonesian family-style dining by the flourishing food empire of Locavore. Locavore – see the dining spot that I mentioned first – is more than just a restaurant. Chef-owners Eelke Plasmeijer and Ray Adriansyah, who are beyond it, have developed it much further.

We didn’t go but they also have a cocktail bar called Night Rooster and another restaurant, their newest, called Nusantara. It aims to celebrate Indonesian food by offering a menu of classic regional dishes that most non-locals have probably never heard of.
