When I googled “best nasi campur in Ubud”, I came across Warung Makan Bu Rus, an unassuming Balinese restaurant housed in a hidden backyard. The ambience here is an experience in itself—customers dine in tiny huts scattered throughout a lush garden, and you may need to climb up a couple of stairs to reach your table. We’re not exaggerating when we say every dish we ordered tasted spectacular.

With only 3 days to explore Bali’s food scene and a whole list of must-eat, you might be wondering how one decides which to try. Well, one thing’s for sure – you have to try the nasi campur at Warung Makan Bu Rus. Translating to “mixed rice,” this dish is far from the cai fan you’re used to in Singapore, boasting bold Balinese spices that’ll keep you coming back for more.

Since we were travelling around Bali on a budget we ate a lot of local warungs to keep the costs down. They serve authentic Balinese food. One of our favourites which was a short walk from the Kajeng Rice Fields and close to our hotel was Warung Makan – we actually had our Christmas dinner there – although it consisted of fried duck and rice!

Friendly Bu Rus doesn’t look like much from the street, but once you reach the garden at the back, it’s an oasis. We came here for an early dinner, between a heavenly massage session at Yeh Pulu, a few doors down the street, and seeing the Kecak show. I had the seafood curry, which was hot and spicy, just like a good curry should be.

Biarpun judulnya “warung”, Warung Makan Bu Rus menawarkan tempat makan ala resto yang vibes-nya Bali banget. Dengan tempat duduk semi outdoor, kamu serasa lagi makan di halaman rumah nenek, nyaman dan teduh. Warung Makan Bu Rus menyajikan makanan tradisional Indonesia yang bakal menggoyang lidah tetapi dompetmu tetap happy.

The Makan Bu Rus warung on Jalan Suweta is much closer to the center of town and comes highly recommended. Here we sat out on their garden terrace and ate a tasty Nasi Goreng and Chicken Curry. Together with a Pina Colada and Arak Madu (Bali’s iconic tipple with lime and honey) our bill came to IDR 150,000 (€9.50).

This budget-friendly restaurant in Bali introduces you to authentic flavours through its aromatic curries and grilled satay, reminiscent of a home-cooked Indonesian meal. Warung Makan stands out by preserving traditional recipes, setting it apart from other run-of-the-mill local eateries.

Another great local spot is Warung Makan Bu Rus, conveniently located near Ubud Palace. The food here is simple but delicious, with affordable prices. We highly recommend the nasi goreng ayam special, which comes with flavorful chicken satay and tempeh.

I was pleasantly surprised when I stepped into Warung Makan Bu Rus. It’s located very close to the Ubud Water Palace and the setting really impressed me. All the seating is outdoor in a garden area tucked behind a busy street.

Tempat makan ini sendiri sebenarnya tidak mempunyai tampilan tempat yang mewah atau berlebihan. Ini membuat banyak orang keliru. Banyak orang mengira Warung Bu Rus sama seperti tempat makan murah pada umumnya.

Warung Bu Rus menyediakan beraneka masakan khas pedesaan Bali yang terkenal akan cita rasa lezatnya. Tempatnya tenang dengan suasana rumah dan kebun yang sangat cocok sebagai tempat bersantai.

We came here for dinner one night and almost missed the spot. It’s a bit tucked away behind the main shop front. You have to walk in to find the seating inside a garden styled dining space.

Suasana di Warung Bu Rus menenangkan, cocok kalau ingin makan sekaligus bersantai. Konsepnya homey dan semi outdoor. Menunya beragam, ada menu khas Indonesia dan fusion food.
