The history of Miyazaki is as textured and interesting as any of its teppanyaki dishes. Having married an Irishwoman, Japanese chef Takashi Miyazaki spent months travelling the country in search of a suitable location to set up his maiden restaurant. He consulted local fishmongers as much as estate agents, eventually choosing Cork for its laid-back charm and the freshness of its seafood.

Authentic Japanese food took its time to come to Cork, but when it did the city was spoiled with the arrival of Miyazaki on Evergreen Street in 2014. Despite being mainly a takeaway (though the ‘hot noodle soup’ is eat in only) the tiny eatery has gained a reputation for serving ‘The Best Japanese Food in Ireland’. The mind boggles following Takashi Miyazaki on social media; his feed includes a continual stream psychedelic-coloured dishes, made with a mix of local and exotic ingredients, and a constantly evolving chalkboard menu, with daily specials that might require translation before ordering.

From the English Market, cross over the pedestrian bridge to Sullivan’s Quay, turn right and then walk 300 yards up the hill to find Miyazaki Japanese Kitchen – a little Tokyo-style take-out on one of the oldest streets in Cork. Chef Takeshi Miyazaki is a relatively recent arrival to Cork but has built a big reputation thanks to his classic Japanese street-food. It’s small and can get very busy, lunchtime is great to find one of the stools at the counter and enjoy some amazing Japanese food.

At the bottom of Barrack Street since 2015, this tiny Japanese cafe and take-out is one of Cork’s great gems. Chef Takashi Miyazaki has, along with the rest of the people on this list, brought something special and new to Leeside. He has gone on to open his own Michelin-starred restaurant in the city centre, but the original little take-out on Evergreen street remains close to our hearts.

Let's not forget the Japanese love of noodles, as shown so well at Miyazaki. They like to keep things plain and simple, like so much of Japanese culture, so these are served cold with a dipping sauce that's rich with umami flavours to create a dish that is intensely satisfying however often you enjoy it. Strolling distance from the city’s Elizabeth Fort sits the rather ordinary exterior of a takeaway. But despite its humble frontage, Miyazaki is a takeaway like few others. It is named after chef patron Takashi Miyazaki, who is one of Cork’s few chefs able to boast a Michelin star and a Chef of the Year trophy, which he won in 2015.

04/10/2024: Delicious pork meat and marinated egg, the ramen was good and the onigiri was too. I am not experienced in Japanese food, but I can understand why this place is loved by anyone who enjoys japanes food. A small restaurant, gives you a retro Japanese vibe while eating your ramen.

Miyazaki is a delicious Japanese takeaway restaurant located on Barrack Street. The restaurant is renowned for its authentic sushi options, which are made with the freshest ingredients. Miyazaki also offers a range of other traditional Japanese dishes, including tempura and udon noodles.

Now, following the envy induced by Galway’s Wa Sushi and Cork’s Miyazaki and Ichigo Ichie, the capital finally has its own answer. To see such practiced perfectionism up close and personal is a rare treat; to have it at last on our doorstep is a cause for celebration.

While it’s worth trying to get a reservation at the Michelin-starred Japanese restaurant Ichigo Ichie, bear in mind that chef Takashi Miyazaki also runs the more casual option Miyazaki on Evergreen Street, where it’s easier to nab a table or get a takeaway.

A takeaway-style shack that also has seats at the counter, this is the place to go for thick noodles to slurp up in minutes. Queues form quickly, and for good reason. Miyazaki serves up outstanding Japanese food at low prices.
