Opened in 2012, during the height of the recession, this passion project started small, serving just coffee and baked goods with a focus on making everything fresh and in-house. Within a couple of years they expanded to breakfast, then lunch, then dinner; now, there are two locations, a cookbook, daily brunch, and a heap of awards. The bright and contemporary city center location—all light woods, quirky furnishings, and greenery—has expanded, too, so there’s plenty of seating both inside and out to accommodate the die-hards.

A delightful slow-food sanctuary within the Dublin dining scene, Brother Hubbard is a cozy, elegantly designed Northside café with a stripped-down but standout menu. The healthy emphasis is on fresh salads and soups with delicious twists; dishes tend to have a Middle Eastern feel, with an Irish touch here and there. It's strong on detail, from the muted tones and unobtrusive-but-striking modern design with elegant, cosy terrace, to the addition of cute little patterns in your cappuccino froth.

Get your morning coffee at Brother Hubbard North, one of the city’s best-loved cafes, then walk up O’Connell Street past the GPO – the famous post office that sheltered Irish rebels during the 1916 Rising. Visit the Hugh Lane Gallery on Parnell Square, seeing Francis Bacon’s reconstructed studio and works by Irish and international artists. Vegetarians have their pick of brunch dishes like turkish eggs menemen and beans baked in a rich tomato sauce, served with a fried egg, feta and olive yogurt.

With the hype surrounding this place, I’ll be honest and admit that my expectations were pretty high and so I was disappointed that the food and atmosphere was a bit flat – In all honesty, I was expecting 11/10 but feel like 7.5/10 is more appropriate.. which is still good. There are a couple of solid vegan/veggie options on the brunch menu, I ordered a mocha with oat milk and the vegan avo special – described as smashed avocado & chickpea on sourdough, topped with sautéed green lentils, red onion, plum tomato, crispy smoked maple coconut crisps & peashoots with romesco bravas.

Brother Hubbard, with multiple locations throughout the city (on Capel Street north of the Liffey; on South Circular Road and in Ranelagh on the south side) is ideal for meat-free mezze and inspired brunch options, as is the Middle Eastern mecca of Shouk in Drumcondra. Hen’s Teeth is a gallery-store-café with mighty vegan sambos and ras el hanout roast cauliflower; you can also get great vegan options at community-favourite the Fumbally, where you can linger by the huge windows, and Two Pups, a pet-friendly café in the Liberties that does a fabulous steaming dahl.

This well-loved, gluten intolerant-friendly spot is well worth a visit if you're ever in town, dishing out a small but mighty menu bursting with creativity and a commitment to using fresh ingredients. Brother Hubbard whips up everything from scratch, serving breakfasts, brunches, and lunches that have won awards and hearts alike. Their menu is a Middle Eastern mosaic spanning countries like Lebanon to Turkey and Syria to Jordan — think mezze trays, eggs menemen, and sweet treats like baked Alaska and coconut sorbet.

What was originally Sister Sadie on South Circular Road, Brother Hubbard rebranded and extended to two sites, one North and one South Dublin to keep up with the huge demand for great quality Dublin brunch. Brother Hubbard is one of the original brunch spots and listed as one of the ‘top 100 places to eat in Ireland’ for many years, their wholesome and refreshing approach to food is unrivalled in the area. A really good Turkish Eggs Menemen is hard to find but Brother Hubbard does it and so much more to perfection.

There are fewer better places in Dublin to while away an afternoon than Brother Hubbard, what with the punchy coffee, the selection of treats and the kind staff. The spot on Capel Street which used to house the old Gary Rhodes restaurant, is bloody massive, so massive in fact part of it is sectioned off. Typically one of the blockers for taking up a table is that other people might need it to yanno drink coffee but at this Brother Hubbards there is ample space to hang out there midweek and do a bit of work.

Dishing up some of the best brunch Dublin has to offer for many-a-year now, Brother Hubbard has locations on Capel St. and Harrington St. and in both Arnotts and Ranelagh. Their Middle Eastern-inspired menu has signature dishes like The Famous Pulled Pork (14 hour slow cooked pull pork served with greens and crispy onions on sourdough). There’s also everything from a Aubergine Baba Ganoush (with potato, pickled cabbage and a flatbread) and a Harissa Chicken Sandwich (with lemon-garlic aioli and greens).

Situated on the busy Capel Street just a short walk away from the River Liffey, this venue is much larger than others we’ve listed already, with a bright and modern interior with a glass ceiling and plenty of greenery lining the walls. On the menu, you’ll find an eclectic range of breakfast classics with interesting continental and Middle Eastern twists.

The awning outside this local eatery on Capel Street declares, “This is the café you have been looking for.” The plant-filled independent café focuses on simple, pure food and takes pride in making everything from scratch. Breakfast and brunch are served seven days a week, with brunch available until nearly 4 pm. Dig into the lightly scrambled Turkish eggs menemen, with herbs and feta, or treat yourself to the signature French toast with white chocolate and coconut mascarpone.

Coffee and tea is sourced from two of the best Dublin suppliers, 3FE and Wall and Keogh and their homemade drinks including orange and lemon barley water and rose, raspberry and apple are refreshing and different. In recent months they have really stepped up their sweet treat offerings and there are now a range of baked goods from scones to friandes as well more dessert-style items.

These two beloved cafés on the north and south side of the city serve eye-opening brunch dishes with a Middle Eastern twist, including The Vegan Mezze Tray (Beetroot Falafel with Green Tahini & pomegranate, hummus, Middle Eastern Tahini slaw flatbread and more) and Moroccan Eggs Zaalouk. Now renowned throughout the whole of Dublin, Brother Hubbard opened its doors in 2012, which initiated the transformation of Dublin’s somewhat dull café culture. Situated at different locations throughout the city, Brother Hubbard is a trendy cafe that serves excellent dishes with a subtle Middle Eastern touch to it.

There are four branches of the vegan-friendly Brother Hubbard around the city, the most spacious of which is on Capel Street, where weekend crowds get together for noisy catch ups over battered cauliflower wraps and oat matcha lattes. For something sweet, head to Póg Café on Tara Street – you mightn’t expect a pancake joint to cater to vegans or coeliacs, but all of their dishes can be adapted for both, drizzled in maple syrup, fruit and nuts.

If you are looking for classic comfort food with a modern twist, there is nowhere better to visit during your stay than Brother Hubbard. This restaurant features all of the classics you would expect in a British restaurant but camped up to the next level for the best possible culinary experience. What I loved about this place is that you’re instantly greeted by the owner and made to feel at home, which for me really set the tone for the sort of eatery it was and the atmosphere they were going for.

Brother Hubbard is among the most loved places in Dublin for a Sunday brunch and the reason is simple: the dishes are a mix of traditional Irish and other cultures, African first and foremost, with the certainty that all the ingredients are local and from well known suppliers. The pull pork sandwich is simply delicious as well as the croque Madame especially if accompanied by a good coffee.

PinA small, indie cafe on Capel Street, Brother Hubbard serves excellent 3fe coffee; a double shot of espresso is standard – my kinda place!. I had a breakfast of champions here – a breakfast special where, for €9.95 you can get a hot drink + OJ + toast / (a massive) scone / scroll + porridge / granola / beans (which come topped with feta yoghurt and a sprinkling of sumac – delish!).

It’s hard to open twitter or facebook and not see something about Brother Hubbard. Can this place do no wrong?. Well yes, the addition to the original cafe in the form of a prefab-school canteen-Ikea showroom next door isn’t much to sing about.

My favorites are Brother Hubbard on Capel Street for gorgeous fresh scones with orange blossom butter & a flat white (they only do one variety of scone so if you need sultanas or anything in them it's probably not the place for you).
