This gem of an old Dublin boozer—which was once also the local grocer—has been turned into a gastropub and world-beer emporium, without losing too much of its real Dublin feel. It's the perfect spot for a quick pint of ale and a plate of black pudding (with pear relish and red chard) if you don't feel like a full sit-down meal. Microbrewery beers are hard to come by in Ireland, so the wide selection of small-label ales, lagers, and stouts is reason enough to make the trip to the evocatively named village of Stoneybatter on the Northside.

While this down-to-earth gastropub may be located in trendy Stoneybatter, there’s no pretension to be found here. Regulars mingle over a pint at the traditional wooden bar, and seasonal menus are an impressive list of local fare. Featuring gems such as Goatsbridge trout and Mr Jeffares blackcurrants, the offerings include all-Irish dishes such as melted Gubbeen cheese with Ballymakenny potatoes, and pork collar with colcannon (potato and cabbage) mash.

Don’t even think of trying to order a Guinness or a Budweiser here – it’s Irish craft beer all the way, and these are some of the labels. If you’re looking for a “White Hag”, “Trouble Brewing”, or a “Crafty Hen”, this is the place. Don’t even think about ordering “Guinness” or “Budweiser” here – it’s all craft beer with lots of interesting names. As the name suggests, L Mulligan Grocer in Stoneybatter used to house a grocery store, and the back of the pub is now a first-rate restaurant serving clever, creatively styled Irish food.

It seems to be a yearly tradition that L Mulligan Grocer get mentioned in the New York Times as an excellent location for trying all things Irish. They put a huge amount of effort into sourcing the best whiskeys, beers, and food from local sources. When they originally opened they tried to stock as many whiskeys as possible, but now they’ve adopted a policy of favouring quality over quantity.

L.Mulligan Grocers in Stoneybatter are a gastro pub specialising in Irish Whiskeys. This place is certainly one of the better ones, organising whiskey tastings and focusing their menu on drinks&food pairings. Chapter One is a Michelin star awarded restaurant that gained recognition especially through its famous State Dinner, created for the event of the State banquet, held at Dublin Castle.

This pub is an unlikely one for this particular list but only because it's location in Stoneybatter doesn't make it as easy for you backpackers and hostellers to get to from the city centre proper but it must appear on the list because it's a real diamond of the pub scene. Very local and very unique, it's worth the short trek for the wonderful beer selection and it's tasty artisan food.

Mulligans have a delicious offering of food with a menu that changes regularly showcasing the best of seasonal food. Their love of whiskey, gin and beer ensures a mighty night in Dublin. Regular tasting events are also something to watch out for and their passion even stems as far as their own Whiskey and speciality spirits store in Powerscourt Town House the far side of the river.

Another fantastic restaurant supplying the finest Irish food and drink is L Mulligan in Stoneybatter, a 10-minute walk from our 4-star hotel in Dublin. The food menu is seasonal & they work with Irish producers and farmers to feature as many local ingredients as possible. They make most components of their meals in-house including sauces, desserts, bread, preserves and gravy.

Even though this grocery store slash bar is technically outside of the city center, I still wanted to include it in this list because it’s so great. It’s known for carrying excellent and carefully picked beers, whiskeys, and local food. Specifically, they have around 150 whiskeys from Ireland and Scotland, and a small collection from Japan, Wales, Sweden, and Belgium.

The special meal kit for Burns’ Night on January 28 includes haggis, cock-a-leekie soup, Irn-Bru and a whiskey tasting via Zoom. The Burns’ Night dinner has been an unbroken tradition at L Mulligan Grocer for the last 11 years, and chef/owner Seáneen O’ Sullivan isn’t letting a pesky pandemic get in the way of the celebrations.
