This sexy little date spot is always at a low hum, which makes it perfectly suited for a candlelit night of deep conversations. Take a break from asking your dining partner all about their hopes, dreams, fears, and regrets to pick out a bottle of Spanish wine (any of Uno Mas’ light, citrussy white wines from the Canary Islands will be outstanding), and order a few plates from the ‘para picar’ section, like the paper-thin jamón ibérico or the mound of perfectly charred padrón peppers. The bigger plates change often with the seasons.

To call this place a tapas restaurant would be to sell it short. Sure, Uno Mas features all the classics, like gilda, croquetas and potato tortillas, but also turns out more unusual dishes like fried sweetbreads, punchy yellowtail crudo and asparagus fregola, all served in a cosy space that’s a dream for eavesdroppers. The mains are hearty and designed to be shared, like the milk fed lamb cooked in manzanilla, so try your best not to fill up on bread dunked in their signature peppery olive oil – it’ll be a challenge.

As its name suggests, Spain is the primary inspiration at Uno Mas, where the mix of small nibbles and larger plates will transport you back to those sun-soaked trips to southern Europe. The usual tapas suspects are available in the para picar section, from croquetas to Padrón peppers, while the main dishes incorporate other Mediterranean influences. Wine is not overlooked either, with bottles from various Spanish regions being the main draw of a passionately curated list.

If you can’t venture unnecessarily beyond 5km of your door, a weekend sojourn to Spain is firmly off the cards, but the flavours aren’t far away when Uno Mas is around. A set menu (€32 pp) has all the obligatory nibbles with three courses of ever-changing treats, while you can add on other delights like a portion of padrón peppers, their signature flan de queso, or a couple of gildas to fill the void until you can travel to a pintxos bar in San Sebastián. They even offer a potato and onion tortilla mix in a small pan, if the mood takes you.

Taking the lead from their sister restaurant, Etto, owners Liz Matthews and Simon Barrett installed a bar as one of the main seating areas in its Spanish-inspired sibling, Uno Mas. Somehow they've also managed to replicate the convivial feel of the Etto dining room, keeping the service casual and friendly while serving top quality food and wine. We’re not the only ones who think so – the Michelin guide bestowed them with a Bib Gourmand award in 2021, which is presented to restaurants with good quality, good value cooking.

Although we may not have pizza ovens of our own, Uno Pizza is on hand with their at-home kits and an excellent food hack for achieving that restaurant-quality char. The Rathmines-based pizzeria has launched ‘Uno At Home’ kits, delivering all the essential ingredients for you to perfect a take on Neapolitan pizza at home with just a frying pan and an oven or grill. You can choose from the classic Margherita (€16) and the spicy Diavola (€18), or if feeding a crowd the Family Kit, which includes ingredients for both kinds.

A beautiful Modern European restaurant located on Aungier Street, Uno Mas is an unmissable destination for delicious food and wines. The sumptuous á la carte menu is available at both lunch and dinner, and what is on offer changes every day based on the availability of produce to ensure the very freshest, highest-quality flavours in each dish. The ‘para picar’ menu is perfect for sharing, with everything from fresh-baked sourdough with Hojiblanca olive oil to Chorizo Ibérico and padrón peppers to squid à la plancha.

It’s the restaurant that made us a meme last year, but what can we say – it’s everyone’s favourite for a reason. Tapas really are the perfect cuisine for a romantic meal – with all that dish sharing, your hands are far more likely to accidentally-on-purpose brush off each other while you both reach for the last padrón pepper, instantly sending sparks flying all over the place. And since they opened in 2018, a table at Uno Mas has (famously) become one of the hottest and most sought after in Dublin.

Chimac is located in the foodie hub that this part of Aungier street is fast becoming, just across Uno Mas (read review here) and Lucky Tortoise (read review here). Open every day of the week, this casual spot is all about Korean inspired fried (free-range Irish) chicken. The menu is compact and inexpensive, ranging from a choice of chicken sandwiches (€8.50-€8.95) to chicken wings, nuggets and cauliflower wings (€6-€13) as well as fries and cucumber salad (€3.75; €3.95).

At Uno Mas, you won’t find any uninspired olive bowls and it’s Spanish cuisine that elevates the normal tapas experience. A dazzling selection of pintxo and sharing dishes, as well as more extensive starters and mains, is compact but trendy eatery, which features bare white walls and deep-green leather seating. The menu varies periodically, but there are still a selection of real Spanish bites, such as croquetas of salt cod, squid a la plancha, chorizo and jamón ibérico.

A lively, hip and easy-going bistro vibe, Uno Mas serves quality Spanish cuisine close to the city centre. With friendly staff and an eye on value for money there’s a vibrancy about Uno Mas that will appeal to everyone. Sometimes everything clicks and you get a place that just chimes with warmth and authenticity, with very good food and a worthy selection of wines.

At Uno Mas on Aungier Street, the menu is very varied, so you’ll always find something that you want, with a few curveballs like squid and octopus thrown into the mix. Their squid à la plancha is great. You’re also within walking distance of some of Dublin’s best pubs, like The Swan and the Long Hall, which is an added bonus for me.

A sister restaurant of our other pick, Etto, Uno Mas takes inspiration from Spanish cuisine and consistently gets great reviews. The Neapolitan-style pizza itself was very good; with a few extras, you could make it a sensational pizza. Your dough is fantastic, but feel free to be a little bolder and use more salt; it will give it, and therefore the pizza, more flavor overall. Your pizza sauce with San Marzano tomatoes is similar.

The award for Casual Dining of the Year went to the always thrilling Uno Mas on Dublin's Aungier Street, a spot that specialises in delicious small plates and fine wines, while the award for Best Cocktail Experience went to the Tack Room in Limerick's Adare Manor.

With a regularly changing menu, you’re in for a surprise treat at Uno Mas. The sister restaurant to the aforementioned Etto, the menu offers Spanish favourites with a modern twist. Nothing lacks on flavour at this spot, with sharing being greatly encouraged.

Uno Mas in Dublin received the award for Best Customer Service, while Goldie in Cork won Best Casual Dining. The much-loved The Sky and The Ground in Wexford was named Pub of the Year. Meanwhile, Dublin’s Orwell Road Restaurant won Best Newcomer.

Fortunately, some of my previous Dublin city centre favourites, including Delahunt, Etto, and The Winding Stair, are still thriving – though Etto is now rivalled by its newer sibling Uno Mas (below) which is, if anything, even more appealing.
