Reviews Summary

Kirwan's is celebrated for its high-quality, fresh local seafood and a cozy atmosphere that often features live jazz music. Diners praise the friendly service and the extensive wine selection, making it a popular spot for both locals and tourists. However, some reviews mention that the decor could use an update, and one diner noted an unusual texture in the chowder and risotto.

"Lovely restaurant in the old Town, cosy and comfy with great friendly and knowledgeable staff. Great atmosphere, great food and good wine selection. We had the seafood chowder which was excellent, and the prawns which were perfectly cooked and full of flavour. We then shared the black sole with a couple of sides. Also perfectly cooked and tasted great. Excellent meal."

Carl King

"Really great food and atmosphere. The seafood chowder, the lobster risotto, and the scallops were all amazing. The desserts looked delicious as well but we were unfortunately too full to order one. We are tourists passing through, but if we are ever back in Galway we would definitely come here again!"

Cara Clayton

"It was a nice place to visit. It's a very big restaurant with seating outside, inside and on the first floor. We were day upstairs that had a bar as well. We started with a very delicious carafe of red wine. They gave us some yummy bread for the table with some delicious butter. My daughter ordered their prawns as her main and a side of vegetables. My husband ordered the steak and I ordered the seabass. Everything was done well but it wasn't excellent. We enjoyed our meal and the service was very good. We ended with a pistachio creme brulee which was very good!"

The Best Seafood Restaurants In Galway, Ireland

The Seafood Bar @ Kirwan’s was one of the first restaurants to open on the newly restored Kirwan’s Lane – one of Galway’s oldest streets – in the mid-1990s, and today, it’s still one of the city’s most popular restaurants. Both locals and tourists flock here for the ambience, live music and especially the food, which revolves around the sea. Between Galway Bay rock oysters, linguine of gambas prawns and palourde clams, and their own signature fish and chips with tartare sauce, pescatarians will be spoiled for choice.

Nestled into a lamp-lit corner of Kirwan's Lane near the Quays, this slim, two-story oasis has served quality local seafood for more than 20 years. Its selection reads like a travel guide from the highlights of the Wild Atlantic Way: Burren smoked salmon, Dingle prawns, and Connemara mussels. Owner Mike O'Grady combs the local waters for the finest produce for Kirwan's, and beef and chicken are also on the menu.

Named after one of Galway’s 14 Tribes, the quaint Kirwan’s Lane lies inside Galway’s former city walls. This tight pedestrian street curves through a ravine of rustic stone houses that have elements dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. These buildings hold pubs, restaurants, cafes and arts and crafts shops, and outdoor tables skirt the path when the weather’s good.

10 Best Seafood Restaurants In Galway For 2025

At the bottom of the old town, in the Latin Quarter, this chic seafood restaurant is a great spot for those who love dining out and live jazz music. Semi-formal, or smart casual, it’s definitely fancier than most with a polished wooden bar, long-stemmed wine glasses, and feel akin to a Parisian cafe. This place just oozes class.

Kirwan’s Lane is famed for its delicious Seafood Bar (sometime people drive over from surrounding towns just for that). And it’s not just the seasonal seafood – meat and veggie dishes are just as carefully prepared using the best locally grown produce. The cuisine is very modern Irish, and very tasty.

Best place for seafood in Galway : galway

I think McDonaghs on Quay street or Hooked on Henry street r best for Fish n Chips. Most places in Galway will have fresh fish on the menu. If its freshly caught and simply cooked it'll be nice!.
