A feed from McDonagh’s fish and chip bar is a high point for many a visitor to Galway, and their Quay Street seafood restaurant is equally satisfying. You’ll struggle to choose between specialities such as fish soup, native oysters farmed nearby in Kilcolgan village, and wild Clarenbridge mussels steamed in a garlic-chilli-coconut milk sauce. Their two-course set menu, served daily, is an excellent value at €19.95, complete with a glass of house wine.

The humble fish-and-chip is king at this stalwart restaurant, serving deep-fried cod, whiting, haddock, and hake for decades. The reasonably priced fish is served with a heap of fabulous, freshly cooked chips (which have won a nationwide competition for the best in Ireland) and eaten at communal tables—a great way to meet the locals.

A traditional fish and chip shop, McDonagh’s is one of the more casual seafood restaurants in Galway, but don’t let it’s casual charm fool you – there’s an incredible variety of seafood on offer here. All of the fish is sourced from sustainable stocks with traceable origins, and the spuds are peeled fresh every morning to create the most incredible homemade chips. Inside there are a few tables and chairs, enough for twenty or so diners, but it’s not unusual to see folks lined up at the door for a takeaway.

It's all very well organized. Inside – prices posted clearly, you wait your turn, and you'll be fed pretty quickly.

McDonagh's in Galway deserves a standing ovation for their amazing seafood. The moment I walked in, I knew I was in for a treat. The freshness of the seafood was undeniable, and the batter was light and crispy.

In business since 1902, McDonagh’s is an inexpensive family-run fish and chips restaurant located on Quay Street. The Cod and Fries is the top seller, but they are known for their fresh-daily oysters, too.
