Reviews Summary

McDonagh's is a beloved Galway institution, consistently praised for its incredibly fresh seafood, especially the classic fish and chips and native oysters. While some find the atmosphere to be akin to fast food and the fries less remarkable, the overwhelming sentiment is that the quality and freshness of the seafood make it well worth any wait. The efficient service, even during peak times, is also a significant plus for many diners.

"Went to Galway for the day and this place was highly recommended. I had the fried Cod and chips with a small Coke. The fish was so fresh with a nice portion, and the chips very hearty and tasty. Wonderful homemade tartar sauce, but no ice for the drink. I think this is a trend in Ireland. Second place to not offer it. Very festive restaurant to eat as you people watch the crowd on the promenade."

Karen Stark

"The food here was tasty with ample portion sizes, but warning: the fries were huge! The fish was fresh, the tartar was good and the oysters were the best my wife has ever had. Staff moved people into seats as they opened up. It was busy and not very relaxing, but an above average eating experience."

Mark Bouchey

"Popped in for a quick lunch ... service was amazingly fast for a super busy period. Fresh seafood... we had the hake, mackerel, sausage , fresh oysters and chips.... no complaints."

The Best Seafood Restaurants In Galway, Ireland

A feed from McDonagh’s fish and chip bar is a high point for many a visitor to Galway, and their Quay Street seafood restaurant is equally satisfying. You’ll struggle to choose between specialities such as fish soup, native oysters farmed nearby in Kilcolgan village, and wild Clarenbridge mussels steamed in a garlic-chilli-coconut milk sauce. Their two-course set menu, served daily, is an excellent value at €19.95, complete with a glass of house wine.

10 Best Seafood Restaurants In Galway For 2025

A traditional fish and chip shop, McDonagh’s is one of the more casual seafood restaurants in Galway, but don’t let it’s casual charm fool you – there’s an incredible variety of seafood on offer here. All of the fish is sourced from sustainable stocks with traceable origins, and the spuds are peeled fresh every morning to create the most incredible homemade chips. Inside there are a few tables and chairs, enough for twenty or so diners, but it’s not unusual to see folks lined up at the door for a takeaway.
