Butterslip opened in 2005, full of colourful ideas and wild notions, the result of much day dreaming, notebook scribling, scrapbook filling and finally one great flight of madness. The scribbler, day dreamer and committed pritt sticker here is me, Anne, still often to be found doodling and daydreaming – these days I just try and make it look more productive. The name is taken from Butterslip Lane in Kilkenny, one of the city’s many curious and charming side streets, and where we first opened the eponymous shop (there was a very nice party, complete with a clown, cakes, lots of balloons and liquorice allsorts).

Hmmm, maybe I’ll have pork for dinner…A tempting place for dinner.But Al had found Matt the Millers on his phone and wanted to go there. It was a good choice in terms of food – I had an excellent goat cheese and red onion chutney tartlet with a salad and Al ribs in a dark’ bourbon’ sauce. The beer selection was less enticing so I had a wine and Al something that he wasn’t too impressed with.Two other places that were recommended but we didn’t make it to were Tynan’s Bridge House Bar (2 John’s Bridge) for its traditional music and the modern Langton House Hotel.

Situated right at the entrance to the four star Kilkenny River Court Hotel, here you can feast on the likes of crisp roasted duck or Thai green curry amidst a sophisticated and elegant setting. Yindees also features a popular cocktail bar where you can chill out in good company before or after your meal.

On the opposite side of the bridge to the Kilkenny River Court Hotel, you’ll find Matt The Millers. Monday nights in Matt’s are a right of passage for Kilkenny locals and visitors alike, the bar having scooped countless awards and nods for live music and entertainment over the years. When it comes to the food though, the kitchen is flat out from early morning until 10 at night with plenty to choose from.

Whisky aficionados must visit The Dylan Whisky Bar , just down the hill from the castle and next to the excellent Matt the Miller’s Restaurant. At Dylan’s (yes, named after Bob), you can sample the best Irish whiskies, including a somewhat pricey but oh-so-good, three-glass flight of the top of the top shelf editions. Redbreast 21, incredible - and more than a $200 a bottle - was the high point.

I first visited Matt the Miller’s over a decade ago, and it still looks the same and remains a classic Kilkenny pub. 19/05/2025: I love this place, every Monday, a fab band called after dark keep the place hopping. Well worth the 90min drive. 15/05/2025: Food is very poor can’t get orders right staff are not nice people very ignorant do not recommend this place at all don’t go in pass it of a lot nicer places around

One of the best things to do in Kilkenny is just stroll in the historic city centre and adore the charming buildings. However, if you want to visit an attraction inside or attend an experience, that will cost you a few euros.
