The cooking comes in the form of Mediterranean sharing plates, where strong flavours abound and a Spanish influence is particularly prevalent.

Saint Francis Provisions exudes the west coast cool of something imported from America — St Francis is San Francisco — and Barbara and John Nealon’s classy destination is a “sprezzatura wunderkind”: you simply don’t see the hard graft that animates their cooking. Their toastie, for starters, builds a complex structure involving pumpkin butter, honey, candied nuts, apple and taleggio on a base of sourdough, and it makes for a sandwich that is “mouth music” all the way to the last bite. Barbara has learnt well from her time in San Francisco, so while Saint Francis may be a petite room, there is a complexity and generosity in everything they do — especially the natural wine dinners, when chef Darren Kennedy lets rip with dishes such as cod with XO sauce; Oysterhaven oysters with grapefruit vinegar; and beef cheek with pangrattato.

It was a joy to open Instagram earlier this year and see the smiling faces of head chef Rebeca Recarey Sanchez, owner Barbara Nealon, and front of house Emily Hartless celebrating their receipt of a Michelin Bib Gourmand. Seating a mere 13 guests, this little spot sends guests home rollickingly happy, sated on Spanish-influenced small plates and natural wines. Watch out for pop-up pintxos nights.

They’ve barely been open a season and St Francis Provisions in Kinsale is already making major waves in the sandwich loving community. Their hefty Gubbeen pistachio salami baquette involves grilled nectarines (nectarines if you don’t mind… grilled) and fresh rocket on an Arbutus roll. It’s meaty and juicy and salty and you’ll be dreaming about it nightly from the first bite.

Great decor and really great local produce is at the heart of Saint Francis. The kind of cooking I love – wonderful ingredients cooked simply… and well!. The owners moved home from the food mecca that is San Francisco and the inspiration from their time there is evident in their tasty menu and stylish decor.

For drinks and dinner: The Tap Tavern for pints (a traditional Kinsale favourite which never seems to change) and on to St Francis Provisions or The Black Pig – both of which need booking well in advance. Not forgetting The Supper Club for amazing cocktails and a great dinner afterwards.

Rocked into Kinsale just as dinner service was ramping up but they were kind enough to find a place for me. Service and food were spectacular as I dined outside in the fresh air. Highly recommend the oysters with chef's dressing, grilled mackerel and port wine ice cream.

Kinsale is a smaller coastal town outside Cork that I love and is known for being a foodie place with great restaurants (Saint Francis Provisions, Man Friday - both very good but you could also just stumble into something that looks good as the town is small).

For lunch it is a real treat (and we all need lots of treats right now) to pre-order a glorious picnic packed specially for you at Gourmet Pantry, Francis Provisions or Old Bank House (pre-order so they can have it ready for you).
