Reviews Summary

Mashya is praised for its innovative and delicious Moroccan-Middle Eastern fusion cuisine, with many calling it one of the best meals they've ever had. Diners also highlight the exceptional service and sophisticated ambiance. However, some find the portions small for the price, and a few reviews mention disappointing desserts and issues with accommodating dietary restrictions.

"Good food, but…
In the early 1980s I worked as a volunteer in northern Israel at a kubbutz. Working hard with the cows, apples, fish and cotton. Now many years later….
The aggression and murderousness of the Israeli government towards Gazans, but also towards journalists, is abhorrent. If only I could turn back time, I would never, ever have traveled to Israel."

sjaak

"Genuinely one of the very best meals of my life. One of those meals you come away from not thinking "I'll try that" but with no comprehension of how they did that with that. The mixture of seafood and meat and generally things that should not all be on one plate was genius. But, despite all of the contrasts there remained a consistent theme throughout the food and focus on ingredients. At no point could you be confused about what you were eating, only how they'd managed it. Perfectly matched by excellent service from our waiter, Elad who clearly genuinely cared about the food and our enjoyment of it. Excellent value for money. I can't recommend this highly enough."

Robyn Lewis

"The food is fresh and testy, presented nicely, service is attentive, breads are nice. If considering the food on a chef level category we felt that it didn’t was up to par considering to the price… so was fairly standard dishes. Enjoyable though I can’t say we will return."

The best restaurants in Tel Aviv to try right now

Moroccan meets the Middle East at Mashya, a bar-raising restaurant on the ground floor of the Mendeli Street Hotel. Young chef Yossi Shitrit is keen on spices (evinced by the now legendary bread mixed with 18 different varieties) and a bit of modern theatre (said bread is served ‘impaled’ on a tree branch) inside the sleek white dining room. The menu’s more inventive, lightly molecular dishes best demonstrate Shitrit’s brilliance, highlighted in creations such as shrimp, raw spinach and mushrooms underneath a corn foam and raw tuna topped with molecular aubergine cream and labneh ‘flakes’.

The Culture Trip

The Hottest Restaurants In Tel Aviv Right Now

Opened by Chef Yossi Shitrit to rave review, Mashya is Tel Aviv fine dining at its most regional, offering traditional Maghreb cuisine in a variety of high-end styles. With a menu based on fresh local fish, Mashya takes staples of the local Arabic Galilean kitchen up a notch by bringing them into the 21st century. Dishes like Mashya’s amberjack tartare or its kubenia offer a new twist to the Moroccan classics, but as their starter frena bread shows—sometimes just doing the basics is more than enough.

Mashya – Chef Yossi Shitrit’s interpretation of his Moroccan mother’s cuisine and the street food he grew up with. Some menu highlights include Jerusalem Mix of chicken & lamb offals, amba jello, pickled eggplants & tahini, cauliflower mafroom (meat filled vegetable fried and cooked in tomato sauce, usually made with potato or eggplant) and an excellent version of the classic Arab kubenia of raw meat with bulgur, to which Shitrit adds peanuts and crème fraîche. The restaurant is not cheap, but their fixed price lunch menu offers the same dishes and atmosphere for less.

Best Israeli Breakfasts in Tel Aviv

(1) Mashya - Fridays and Saturdays are a best time to hit up this well-stocked buffet as it is open until 3 pm. It is surprisingly rare in Tel Aviv to find this late of a brunch offering. You order an eggs dish from the regular menu and the chef's prepared buffet (high quality fresh salads, cheese, fish, granola, fresh baked pastries... not what you think of normally for a buffet) is included in the price.
