Duck under the frescoes of the Volta Pinta arch, opposite the Temple of Minerva; just off the Piazza del Commune, you’ll find this family-run trattoria. It specialises in Umbrian regional cuisine, so expect to find staples such as pigeon served alla ghiotta (literally glutton’s style), rabbit alla cacciatore, rich with onions, tomatoes and red wine, the local strangozzi pasta (wheat pasta) and homemade gnocchi.

At this homey, family-run trattoria with a crackling fireplace and stone walls, the women do the cooking and the men serve the food; try the strangozzi alla pallotta (thick spaghetti with a pesto of olives and mushrooms). Connected to the restaurant is an inn whose eight rooms have firm beds and some views across the rooftops of town.

Charming spot in the heart of the city with a serene vibe, perfect for relaxing meals and attentive service. Nice restaurant in the centre, quite quiet environment, friendly staff always present in the room. There was a celiac among us (in total 4 people) and they provided us with gluten-free bread and noodles without any problem.

This was the very first place I took my very first group in 2005 and I’ve brought every single group since, over 100 groups and thousands of happy bellies. Everything I’ve ever ordered has been perfection. This place fills quickly, you should definitely make a reservation.

It’s right in the centre, and even though it’s easy to find it has always managed to offer high-quality food at honest prices. This is a great place for lunch if you’d like to try typical dishes of Umbrian cuisine.

Best restaurant IMHO is Trattoria Pallotta, off the Piazza del Comune. No view, but outstanding food. Order from the seasonal menu.
