Only an hour on the autostrada from Turin, we kicked off our Piedmont roadtrip at the medieval city of Alba, which sits at the crossroads of Langhe and Roero. Alba is one of the gastronomic capitals of Italy, famed for its white truffles and the great wines of Barolo and Barbaresco. The best time to arrive in Alba, we discovered, is on a Saturday morning, when the whole town is converted into one giant street market.

Situated in the northwest of Italy, Piedmont is bordered by Switzerland and France and surrounded on three sides by the Alps, making the region over 40% mountainous. The rugged peaks of one of Italy’s largest national parks, the Gran Paradiso, form a backdrop to the gentle slopes of the Langhe and the damp rice paddies of Vercelli and Novara while to the north, the atmospheric lakes of Maggiore and Orta provide a welcome contrast to Italy’s busier lakes. While the Langhe devotes itself mainly to grape growing, the Roero has a more varied landscape, with hazelnut orchards and forests that are home to truffles and wild mushrooms.

Non a caso, le Langhe, insieme a Roero e Monferrato, sono entrate a far parte dei Patrimoni Mondiali dell’Unesco nel 2014. In tutto il mondo sono considerate il paradiso dell'enogastromia per le cantine e i ristoranti che esaltano, in buona parte, i prodotti del territorio: le carni (bovine in testa) e i salumi come la salsiccia cruda di Bra, tutelata da Slow Food (che qui è di casa), i formaggi (Murazzano e Robiola di Roccaverano, nel Monferrato, entrambi DOP) e la Nocciola Tonda che entra in tante preparazioni, non solo dolci.

Its territory is predominantly mountainous due to the presence of the Alps -whose peaks exceed 4,000 meters above sea level in Monte Rosa and Gran Paradiso - and the Apennines, which descend sharply to the extensive hilly areas of the Langhe, Roero and Monferrato whose wine-growing landscapes have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014. Then follows the broad Po Valley, which begins here in Piedmont, an area particularly rich in water so as to be extensively cultivated with rice fields.

The car is the best way to travel independently between the hills of Langhe, Roero, and Monferrato. If you decide to reach Asti by car, you can take the A21 Turin-Piacenza motorway (Asti Est and Asti Ovest exits, or Villanova).Anyone wishing to reach Asti by camper can do so in complete peace of mind. In the city, there is in fact a free service area for campers, equipped with a discharge of organic substances with a connection point for drinking water (more information here).

Every hill and every village in the Langhe, Monferrato and Roero areas is dominated by the imposing form of a castle or tower. It's a feature synthesized by a verse of Carducci: "... nell'esultante di castella e vigne, suol d'Aleramo" (... in the exultation of castles and vineyards, the land of Alermo"). These buildings tell stories of noble families and violent clashes among landowners, vassals and mini-states; a land that was invaded and pillaged, but never tamed.

From November 11th to December 17th, 2023, the appointment with the “Magical Christmas Village” is renewed at the Royal Castle of Govone, an event spread throughout the Langhe – Roero and Monferrato regions in Piedmont. This event, now in its 17th edition, has been recognized by the European Best Destinations portal as one of the top 10 most important Christmas markets in Europe.

The dramatic hills of the Langhe, Roero, and Monferrato districts were wrapped with rows of grapevines and orchards, crowned with handsome fortresses, and dotted with villages wearing terra-cotta rooftops. Large-scale industry was largely absent from this swathe of the Northern Italian landscape, and that’s much of what made it so visually appealing.
