Bar Senza Nome

Run by a staff of exclusively deaf people, this low-key bar has been going strong for over a decade. As its name suggests, there is no sign over the door ('Senza Nome' means 'without a name') but it's central to the series of bars which buzz each evening just behind the Mercato delle Erbe covered food market. Take a pavement table or find a spot in the simple, rustic-style interior and if you're not well versed in the Italian sign language (LIS) you can pick your choices from a series of cards to take to the bar to order.

The plazas outside the market become a fun nightlife hub each evening, with bars like Senza Nome, which happens to be run by hearing-impaired servers who use drink-image notecards as needed for orders.

In Via Belvedere 11/B, tra i vari bar e locali che si susseguono, gli uni accanto agli altri, c’è questa perla della ristorazione, che nasce da un progetto molto interessante. Fondato nel 2012 da Sara Longhi e Alfonso Marrazzo, che recentemente nel 2020 hanno anche ottenuto la nomina come Cavalieri dell’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana, il Bar Senza Nome è interamente gestito da ragazzi sordi. È un locale all’insegna dell’ integrazione e del confronto, dove si viene serviti da ragazzi sordi e dove si ordina con la lingua dei segni, il cui alfabeto è appeso in vari punti del bar, oppure scrivendo l’ordinazione liberamente su foglietti e post it, o ancora ricorrendo ai gesti: un luogo dove far integrare sordi e udenti.

Appena fuori dal mercato delle erbe, in via Belvedere, troviamo il Senza nome, un locale unico nel suo genere che, d’estate, offre la possibilità di gustarsi l’aperitivo all’aperto. La caratteristica particolare di questo locale è che è gestito da un gruppo di ragazzi non udenti. Per ordinare avete la possibilità di imparare a “segnare” in LIS, la Lingua Italiana dei Segni, birra, spritz, vino bianco, vino rosso… È molto più facile e divertente di quel che si può immaginare!

Founded in 2012 by Sara Longhi and Alfonso Marrazzo, Bar Senze Nome – the ‘bar with no name’ – is the first drinking den in Italy owned and managed by hearing-impaired staff. Here, the tables are turned – the onus is on the hearing to make themselves understood. To order your drinks, either write your selections on the pre-printed tickets provided, be lipread, or try your hand at Italian Sign Language (LIS) in order to whet your whistle.

In via Belvedere 11, the Bar Senza Nome – meaning ‘The No Name Bar’ in Italian – has the distinction of being entirely run by deaf people. You’ll need to write your order on a piece of paper or use sign language (they give you a sheet with the basics). The staff is super-friendly and the spot is located right in front of the Mercato delle Erbe, an indoor market where you can buy tasty pizza slices and polpette (meatballs) to go.

The Senza Nome is a beautiful place very popular with young people. During the evening hours there is the possibility of an aperitif with beer, wine or cocktails accompanied by a delicious buffet. This is not enough, the Senza Nome is not just a bar but a place of cultural and social promotion that often hosts events such as exhibitions and small acoustic concerts.

This bar is particularly popular among the younger ones, not only because of the great vibe but also for the value for the price paid. Aperitivo at this bar is one of the cheapest in the city and it includes some finger food, couscous or pasta salads. Calling “Bar Senza Nome” is a bit restrictive as it can be considered more of a winery and a small restaurant.

Bar Senza Nome—the "Bar With No Name"—is so much more than just a bar. In politically and socially engaged Bologna, it's a focal point for its young, diverse patrons, and a successful community project. Most of the bar servers are hearing impaired and communicate with customers (and one another) via sign language, lip reading, and written notes.

Not far from Neptune’s Fountain is Bar Senza Nome, a unique place for aperitivo in Bologna with a talented team of hearing-impaired bartenders. This bar has a bright, rustic interior area, but I decided to sit on the patio in the sun. It’s not often that I choose beer as an aperitivo, but a refreshing draught brew was just what I needed.

Il Bar Senza Nome è più di un locale, è un manifesto di inclusione. L’atmosfera è vibrante e incredibilmente accogliente, ma ciò che colpisce è il silenzio operoso dietro al bancone, gestito interamente da ragazzi sordi. La comunicazione avviene attraverso lavagnette, post-it e un linguaggio universale fatto di sorrisi e gesti.

The charm of Bar Senza Nome lies in its simplicity and authenticity. With no official name, this “bar without a name” offers a casual, unpretentious atmosphere that invites locals and tourists alike. What stood out during my visits were the exceptional local wines and fresh, tasty aperitivo.

Senza Nome, or Bar With No Name, is an unusual stop with a wide selection of Italian craft beers to change things up from wine. The bar provides easier employment opportunities to the deaf, which means the entire staff is hearing impaired. Expect quality service and stellar brews.

Al centro di una piccola piazza un tempo off limits e oggi piena di vita fino a tardi (per la felicità di chi ci abita). Il Senza Nome vi offrirà ottimi vini, birre, cocktail, eventi e attività, ma soprattutto quell’atmosfera calda e familiare che solo a Bologna esiste.

Questo locale è diventato famoso per una caratteristica del tutto unica: è gestito da ragazzi "non udenti". Infatti si ordina con il linguaggio dei segni!. Ecco perché è un luogo in cui recarsi assolutamente nel caso vi troviate a visitare Bologna.

We found Bar Senza Nome by accident while we were looking for a good aperitivo spot to kill some time until dinner. The wine here is fantastic, but it’s more well-known for its staff.
