What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Ristorante Diana is celebrated as a culinary institution in Bologna, offering authentic regional specialties in an elegant, old-school setting. Diners rave about the traditional dishes, particularly the rich ragù and the theatrical tableside service for boiled meats. While many praise the exceptional food and service, a few recent reviews suggest a decline in quality and an increase in price, with some feeling the experience no longer matches its former prestige.
"The best restaurant in Bologna. The service was excellent and the food couldn't have been better. The best risotto I have ever had. Steak was cooked to perfection. To end the meal, we enjoyed Gelato with chocolate sauce."

"Loved it. Hands down the best lobster pasta I've ever had. I thought they were a bit daring to have mixed down the lobster. It's always hit and miss when you order this dish. But it was beautiful, so so deep in flavour. The mixed seafood grill was also above expectations. We had read great reviews of this place but were worried due to it's central location they would get lots of customers simply due to this... but no. It was all very good. Ragu I would however skip. Aim for the seafood and fish dishes here! The cart with the boiled meat added to the atmosphere and many chose this as their main... but go for the ocean creatures if you like it! Also, great and friendly service. It makes a big deiffenece"

Not just a restaurant, it’s Bologna on a silver platter. Ristorante Diana is where tortellini in brodo gets the red-carpet treatment, wheeled to your table in a steaming tureen like it’s royalty. Since 1909, this culinary time capsule has been serving up serious Emilian soul food under the watchful gaze of waiters who probably invented table etiquette.
Once a cafe, now a monument to meat and pasta..legends like Fellini, Mastroianni, and even the King of Belgium have dined here, probably getting lost in the velvet richness of their ragù. The decor? 1950s elegance preserved in aspic..all mirrors, white tablecloths, and the ghost of a clock that’s seen more power lunches than a Roman senate.
Must-try dish? Tortellini in brodo, hands down. Or the bollito misto cart, a steamy parade of boiled meats that feels like grandma’s hug with a diplomatic passport.
Come for the heritage, stay for the sauce. This isn’t just eating, it’s edible history."

The best restaurants in Bologna to book right now
Off main drag Via Independenza open since 1909, sits a Bolognese institution resistant to the hands of time with the decor to match, white-glove service and a bit of pageantry. This league of restaurants in Bologna can be hit or miss, many resting on their laurels relying on atmosphere, reputation and loyal clientele who either ignore or need to be made aware of cut corners in ingredient quality and technique. However, Diana manages to strike a pleasant balance between all requisites for a memorable meal despite decades past.
Must-Eat Traditional Restaurants in Bologna
Once considered the high temple of Bolognese cuisine, Diana opened its doors in the 1920s, and as such, likes to keep things ritzy, theatrical and preferably white-gloved. The calling cards are lasagna, tortellini and without a doubt the Gran Bollito Diana with Purée e Salsa Verde, with its selection of braised meats carved tableside by a dapper suited waiter. Diana’s freshly churned gelato alla crema is also well worth the calories being drowned in local syrupy amarene cherries.
Best Pasta in Bologna: 9 Spots for Lasagna, Ragù, Tortellini & More
One of the old, but beloved stalwarts of dining in Bologna, Ristorante Diana has been in the pasta making business since 1909. Expect the white tablecloth treatment here, but also expect the Bolognese classic pasta dishes to be memorable. The ubiquitous tagliatelle al ragù is one reason why locals and visitors flock to Diana, but don’t skip the traditional tortellini in brodo: pork-filled parcels bobbing in a bowl of full-flavored chicken broth.
Where to Eat the Best Lasagna in Bologna
Ristorante Diana is a historic establishment renowned for its classic Bolognese cuisine and elegant setting. The ambiance exudes a sophisticated ambiance, perfect for those seeking a traditional dining experience. One of the things I love about their lasagne alla Bolognese is its crispy top layer, which perfectly contrasts with the velvet-soft layers beneath. Their ragu is especially rich, which adds to the flavorful filling.

This stylish venue is located on Via Volturo and lasagna is a staple dish on its menu. The lasagnas at Dianas are extra crispy and irregular in shape, each one is unique and divine. Also on their menu is the traditional and well-loved carrello dei bolliti, a boiled soft meat which is what is used to make broth for the tortellini.
Best Lasagna in Bologna
Both my grandma and mum recommend it and at Diana, hard-to-be-found specialties are also served besides Lasagne. An example is “bollito” meat: the boiled, softe meat from which the original broth for tortellini is done. Diana is still a must where to go without fail to have a “back in time” dining experience.
