What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Pizzeria Giovanni Santarpia is celebrated for its exceptional Neapolitan-style pizzas, including outstanding gluten-free options that impress even the most discerning diners. The friendly staff and pleasant ambiance, including rooftop seating, contribute to a highly recommended dining experience. While it's a local favorite and reservations are advised, the journey is consistently worth it for the authentic flavors.
"We stopped by here during a trip to Florence from London. A friend had insisted that we make the journey out of the city to try this pizza. I was dubious as I have celiac and have to eat gluten free. Expectations were very high, but every single one of them was exceeded. The gluten free pizza was specially developed by the head chef, which the menu explained. The texture was incredible, the perfect balance of crispy and chewy. The simple ingredients topping it were of very high quality and perfectly complemented the dough. My husband had a regular pizza with gluten which he also spoke very highly of. Even the desserts were sensational - my gluten free tiramisu made for a beautiful end to the meal.
I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough; if you are gluten free and you come to Florence, you must make the journey to visit Giovanni Santarpia."

"The classic montanarina…. wow. This review is dedicated to the most INCREDIBLE dish I ate during my entire trip touring Italy so far. An amazing starter that was a flavour bomb & beyond memorable! I ate 2 and honestly I wish I ordered 2 more instead of the pizza. (Nothing against the pizza it was also so good but this stole the spotlight) It was the star of the entire meal thats why I wont even be posting the pizza photos, people should come here just to try this fluffy fried dough heaven. It’s basically a savoury doughnut topped with the most perfect marinara sauce, basil pesto & salted ricotta cheese flakes. I will be dreaming of this when i’m back home truly. Highly HIGHLY recommended for anyone visiting Florence. Make sure to make a reservation ahead of time as it is a local favourite (and now I know why!)"

"This is my third time visiting this pizzeria in the past year, and I truly believe it’s probably the best pizzeria not only in Florence but also in the surrounding area.
I don’t want to go into too much detail about the pizzas—you simply have to come and try them for yourself.
The menu is minimal, without a hundred different dishes—they’re focused on pizza, and that’s it.
The service is excellent, and the staff is friendly.
Reservations are a must."

Best restaurants Florence, Italy
Florentines can't get enough of the thin-crust Neapolitan pizzas oven-fired by master pizzaiolo (pizza chef) Giovanni Santarpia at his thoroughly contemporary pizzeria across the road from Mercato di Sant'Ambrogio. Grab a table between brightly spangled walls and open the feast with deep-fried baccalà (salted cod), porcini mushrooms or other fritto – there is even pizza fritta con lampredotto (deep-fried pizza with tripe).
The best pizzerias in Florence to try in 2021
The Florentines were anxiously awaiting the return of Giovanni Santarpia, who after just over a year took back the place in his own name, moving to a secluded position from the centre, to just outside of town. The bright and contemporary setting is animated by a close-knit staff of former colleagues gathered from previous experiences. A new project studied in detail: the dough is made with a personal blend of 0, type 1 and a percentage of Sicilian wholemeal flour from Mallorca and also the oven - gas-stoked - is customized, with the dome lowered and the possibility of inserting wood pieces to give the desired smoked effect.

Visit Pizzeria Giovanni Santarpia on via Senese for Neapolitan pizza and fried specialties like whole fried pizza, which looks like a fried calzone, mozzarella in carrozza, a kind of mozzarella toast, and montanarine, fried pizza dough pillows with various toppings. You can also find most of these fried delicacies at Antica Friggitoria on via dell’Albero, which also serves fried foods from Sicily and Puglia. Top 10 Pizzerias of Florence: A Guide to the Best Pizza Places
A great and expert pizzaiolo, one of the architects of the changing 'taste' of pizza in Florence. A very good interpreter of the Neapolitan pizza, a classic style where the perfect combination of Neapolitan tradition and the continuous and accurate search for ingredients enhance his two main characteristics: quality and conviviality. The fried pizza with lampredotto, the Margherita, the Marinara with pomodorini del piennolo ( Piennolo cherry tomatoes) and the Salsiccia e friarielli ( sausage and friarielli) are excellent.
