"Review of Trattoria Cammillo – Florence

Delicious classic food in a cozy, authentic setting.
The veal was tender, the tagliatelle with mushrooms rich and flavorful, and the seafood couscous fresh and light.
Great service and a lovely atmosphere, definitely worth a visit!"

"A Perfect Florentine Experience
Trattoria Cammillo is an absolute gem. Tucked away right by the river, it's the perfect spot for an intimate dinner with friends or a romantic evening with your partner. It's a classic, old-school restaurant with an old but incredibly talented staff who make the entire experience feel special.
The food is simple but exquisite, serving up wonderful Tuscan dishes for true gourmands. My go-to is always the duck paired with a glass of Chianti, it's simply amazing!
The atmosphere is what really sets this place apart. It's warm, inviting, and feels like a genuine taste of old Florence. This is a must-visit if you're in town."

The 22 Best Restaurants In Florence - Florence

Anyone who's been to Florence has likely been to Cammillo (open since 1945), and they probably still remember deep diving into their signature tagliatelle with cream, prosciutto, and peas, or having a long leisurely bistecca lunch. Now, it skews touristy and it’s a bit harder to get into (book at least two weeks in advance), but the charm and quality are still there. The bow-tied servers are as much part of the restaurant’s history and identity as the food itself, and they’ll never pass up an opportunity to tease you if you order a cappuccino after lunch.

The only drawback is this institutional trattoria rests on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, however its pastas, fried artichokes and courgette flowers, nearly rare T-bone bistecca fiorentina, soups laced with its family-produced olive oil and organic table wine are always worth the visit for either lunch or dinner. This has been run by the same family for more than 50 years, at the doorstep of the Santo Spirito artisan district. Affable waiters wear dapper attire and some have worked here for more than 20 years.

When one of my best friends who traded in Florence for London a few years ago comes back to town for visits we always love to make a splashy Saturday of it and have a special-occasion lunch at Cammillo. It’s a step up in price point from your average shabby-chic trattoria, but still has a soulful, neighborhood feel, which I love,” Gray says.

24 best restaurants in Florence, according to our city expert

Something of a Florentine institution, Trattoria Cammillo, located on the south bank of the Arno by the Ponte Vecchio, was founded in 1945 by the grandfather of Chiara Masiero, the present owner and part-time chef. Unusually long and varied, the menu consists of meat, fish, and vegetable dishes that change (to a certain extent) with the seasons and a handful of daily specials. Dishes such as gamberi al curry (curried shrimp) with rice and homemade mango chutney have been on the menu for decades alongside classics such as ribollita, lasagna (a nod to Chiara’s Emilian roots), and bistecca alla Fiorentina (T-bone).

The best gluten-free restaurants in Florence

The cuisine of Trattoria Cammillo is that of true Tuscany, made with natural ingredients and first quality: ribollita, steaks and all other meats, mushrooms, truffles, game, cheeses and fish and fresh vegetables. The great thing is that they can make almost the entire menu gluten-free on request and are in fact accredited AIC. Here, tradition goes hand in hand with goodness and is well combined with fried food, delicious and crispy even in gluten-free version.

Trattoria Cammillo — An old-school, timeless classic, one of those places “che non passano mai di moda” (that never goes out of fashion). It is iconic, first and foremost, for its wonderful owner Chiara, and also for its waiters–some of whom have been there for over 30 years–and for its seasonal simple dishes and mind-blowing desserts. Here, you can also find plenty of gluten free options, recipes created due to Chiara’s own intolerance.
