Anyone who's been to Florence has likely been to Cammillo (open since 1945), and they probably still remember deep diving into their signature tagliatelle with cream, prosciutto, and peas, or having a long leisurely bistecca lunch. Now, it skews touristy and it’s a bit harder to get into (book at least two weeks in advance), but the charm and quality are still there. The bow-tied servers are as much part of the restaurant’s history and identity as the food itself, and they’ll never pass up an opportunity to tease you if you order a cappuccino after lunch.

The only drawback is this institutional trattoria rests on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, however its pastas, fried artichokes and courgette flowers, nearly rare T-bone bistecca fiorentina, soups laced with its family-produced olive oil and organic table wine are always worth the visit for either lunch or dinner. This has been run by the same family for more than 50 years, at the doorstep of the Santo Spirito artisan district. Affable waiters wear dapper attire and some have worked here for more than 20 years.

Something of a Florentine institution, Trattoria Cammillo, located on the south bank of the Arno by the Ponte Vecchio, was founded in 1945 by the grandfather of Chiara Masiero, the present owner and part-time chef. The great thing is that they can make almost the entire menu gluten-free on request and are in fact accredited AIC. Here, tradition goes hand in hand with goodness and is well combined with fried food, delicious and crispy even in gluten-free version.

Trattoria Cammillo — An old-school, timeless classic, one of those places “che non passano mai di moda” (that never goes out of fashion). It is iconic, first and foremost, for its wonderful owner Chiara, and also for its waiters–some of whom have been there for over 30 years–and for its seasonal simple dishes and mind-blowing desserts. Here, you can also find plenty of gluten free options, recipes created due to Chiara’s own intolerance.

If you only have a day or two in Florence, Trattoria Cammillo is an absolute must. This white cloth trattoria is as comforting as it gets with welcoming and warm staff that are used to serving dozens of tourists day after day but somehow make you feel special and unique. Cammillo is a great place to go to get a short break from traditional Florentine dishes as many items from their large menu are from regions other than Tuscany.

This cozy trattoria near Pitti Palace offers a great space for celiacs to enjoy a meal in Florence. While the restaurant isn’t 100% gluten-free, they are AiC certified and offer a great selection of celiac-friendly pasta, fish dishes, and even fried foods (we recommend trying the fried zucchini flowers). We came across this lovely little Trattoria as we were rushing back from the other side of the river (it was raining at the time!). We sheltered underneath the front of Trattoria Cammillo out of the rain. The front of the restaurant is very unassuming and the menu on the outside doesn’t mention anything about it having gluten free options.

Celebrating its 75th birthday in 2020, Cammillo continues to serve the best of seasonal Tuscan cooking. White tablecloths, walls lined with photos of friends and friendly and intimate service: this is the ideal spot for dinner on a Thursday or a Sunday lunch.

Front of house is overseen by owner Chiara, the most charming host, fierce but friendly, eyes everywhere and a bit of a local celebrity. Order the steak tartare, the homemade pasta or the vitello tonnato. And save room for the sensational pecorino brûlée.
