If you ask a local Florentine for a restaurant recommendation, the majority will point you straight towards La Casalinga, a hearty trattoria serving some of the finest food Florence has to offer. Both delicious and very reasonable, it’s the best place to go for some genuine Italian eats, serving simple dishes such as lasagne and steak, cooked to perfection. Reservations are essential if you’re not prepared to queue, and definitely don’t leave without trying one of their traditional Italian desserts.

Casalinga means "housewife," and this place, which has been around since 1963, has the nostalgic charm of a mid-century kitchen with Tuscan comfort food to match. If you eat ribollita anywhere in Florence, eat it here—it couldn't be more authentic. Paintings clutter the semi-paneled walls, tables are set close together, and the place is usually jammed.

For more of an old-school vibe Trattoria La Casalinga is a no-frills, family-owned restaurant that serves an excellent Florentine steak and hearty pasta.

Nowhere in Florence does excellent food at value prices better than Casalina; the name incidentally means ‘housewife.’ Florentines and tourists flock to this ‘old-fashioned and proud of it’ local trattoria, which has been serving delicious home-cooking to a satisfied audience for decades, including the best ribollita in Florence. Indeed, style, ethos, and cooking have changed little over the years, but why mess with a winning formula?. Casalinga represents the quintessential trattoria experience in Italy; paintings clutter the walls, you’re barely a conversation away from your neighbor’s table, and the place is always jammed.

The exclusive Scuderia has its own private pool and sprawling gardens, providing a delightful hideaway in the former hunting reserve, while La Casa captures the hearts of all who stay here with its intimate ‘real home’ feeling and welcoming atmosphere. An extensive rebuilding and restyling were carried out under the supervision of architect of the late architect Ettore Mocchetti, former Chief Editor of AD Italy, seducing guests with furnishings that express the true soul of Tuscany, with warm colours and a simple palette finished with refined Tuscan-style furniture and the precious silks of Florentine fabrics.

If you’re strolling around the picturesque neighborhood of Oltrarno, you likely stumble upon a slew of people patiently waiting for a table outside a gorgeous Tuscan restaurant called Trattoria la Casalinga. Far from its modest beginnings, this family-run trattoria started out as a small local haunt and is now among the most acclaimed spots for a classic Florentine steak. Regrettably, I’ve only made it here once so far, but it’s high on my priority list for my next visit, especially after seeing the mouthwatering serving of tomato bruschetta they offer.

It is impossible to eat a pasta and a main course here as the portions are just too huge, though the bean and minestra soups are excellent. Renowned for the peposa beef stew, trippa alla fiorentina, and baccalà salt cod, cooked alla Livornese with tomatoes and basil.

However, Casalinga was actually founded by two men in the 1960s and remains a family-owned establishment to this day. Inspired by countryside cooking, Casalinga is the spot to go for hearty dishes.

It’s only natural then that their huge Bistecca alla Fiorentina is top of the menu. Tucked away from the main tourist haunts, you’ll enjoy a more genuine, local experience.

Trattoria La Casalinga is a true Tuscan institution and one of my favorite places to bring people in the city. It’s not longer as cheap as it used to be (2017) however it is on the more affordable side with a vast menu of local favorites. I like their penne all’arrabiata (spicy tomato pasta), fettunta appetizers and ribollita.

Dedicated to those who love the typical cuisine and are not looking for a fashionable place, La Casalinga is the perfect place to eat typical dishes cooked in the classic manner in a relaxed and very old style environment. If you’re dining out in Florence, try it at some of these good old trattorie: Casalinga, Alla Vecchia Bettola, Trattoria Mario or Trattoria Armando, just to name a few favourites. Trattoria la Casalinga is my “go-to” pick for lunch on a cold and rainy day because they have these hearty soups and dishes that warm you up. They have fantastic steaks and other Florentine-Tuscan fare that will do the trick. Great prices and wonderful food.

Another great find across the Arno, Trattoria La Casalinga is just steps from Piazza Santo Spirito. The interior is spacious, perfect for larger groups, and the staff is very friendly. Our meals were delicious.

This small, family-run trattoria is located right next to Gustapizza. The interior is cozy and the cuisine is excellent. The dishes are typically Tuscan and the price-performance ratio is very good.

Trattoria La Casalinga — Don’t expect much, but a solid, casual traditional meal. We love it best during the warmer months when we can sit outside and enjoy the buzzing Santo Spirito neighborhood.
