Reviews Summary

Le Zie Trattoria Casereccia is celebrated for its authentic home-style Italian cooking and incredibly warm, family-like atmosphere. Diners rave about dishes like the parmigiana and the pastichiotto cake, feeling like they are guests in an Italian grandmother's home. However, some reviews note inconsistencies in pasta preparation and dessert quality, suggesting a mixed experience for certain dishes.

"If you’re in Puglia, this local gem is a must-visit for an authentic pugliese lunch. The warm, family-friendly vibe makes you feel at home, and the food is incredible, especially the best meatballs I’ve ever tasted. Every dish is fresh, homemade, and full of flavor. The service is just as fantastic, friendly, attentive, and passionate about their food. Don’t miss this place when visiting Puglia!"

"Walking through the city we find this old Trattoria. It is a fantastic ideal place to enjoy and taste the food of the Puglia region, especially from the south where the city of milk is. The walls are so full of photos of very famous people from abroad and nationals who have passed through the city and I liked the magnificent food made by the cook who owns the place. A meeting place for families in the city is an ideal place to taste the simple rich and brief regional food."

Gabi MunozM.

"Really cute restaurant all indoors very small menu you felt like you were in your grandmother‘s house. One of the grandmothers was our waitress. She may have been cooking in the kitchen too with her friend or her sister not sure but really cute family run restaurant food was very good not exceptional, but definitely worth trying. Their eggplant. Parmesan was absolutely incredible. Their meatballs were delicious but very gamie. Not sure if there were horse meatballs their chickpea pasta was Very interesting and we’re trying."

Readers' tips: the best of Puglia | Italy holidays

This fantastic restaurant appears to be a private house and seems to be run by a bunch of friendly, bustling, chatting women - it's like being invited into an Italian family. The restaurant serves cucina povera specialities which are all superb. Dish after dish appears: blanched chicory in white bean purée (we were shown by a kindly waitress how to blend it with olive oil and crumbly fried bread); home-made oreccheitte with greens; potatoes baked with mussels and cheese.

Puglia – Lecce’s historic homes

For more traditional restaurants, Trattoria Le Zie has been a veritable institution for over sixty award-winning years and serves classics like sagne (flat, ribbon-like pasta similar to pappardelle or fettuccine), horse meat, seasonal vegetables and sweet desserts. Pastry-making is taken very seriously here, and there is friendly but serious competition concerning who produces the best “pasticciotto”, the most typical local creation, which is made with shortcrust pastry filled with cream. Among the best places to find it are at Natale on Via Trinchese, Chantilly in Piazza Ariosto, Aldemorisco on Via Foscarini and Citiso on Via Oberdan, as well as a branch of the omnipresent Martinucci pastry chain.

The Best Restaurants in Lecce, Italy: My Must-Eat Spots

I thought I’d save the best for last, but honestly, I don’t want to gatekeep. Trattoria Le Zie is the best restaurant in Lecce for local, traditional Salentine cuisine—hands down. It’s the kind of place you’d walk right past if you didn’t know what you were looking for: tucked behind an unmarked door on a quiet residential street, no frills, no fuss, just grandma-level cooking that knocks it out of the park every single time.

Trattoria Le Zie feels a bit like eating in someone’s house—you have to ring the doorbell to get in and it has an informal vibe with the ladies rushing back and forth from the kitchen. It’s not a secret any more, though, and it was full of foreigners. We enjoyed the vegetarian house antipasti of cannellini beans, vegetable tart, potato, olive and tomato salad, and pittule fried dough balls.
