Reviews Summary

This artisanal gelateria is a must-visit in Matera, consistently praised for its exceptionally smooth and creamy gelato with creative and natural flavors. Reviewers rave about the quality and unique taste combinations, though some note that popular flavors can sell out and service can feel rushed during peak times.

"the staff were accommodating and let us try some of the flavours. there’s a unique flavour: spicy chocolate, which is chocolate with chilli peppers. it tastes like regular chocolate but there’s a spicy aftertaste.

a cone with 2 flavours of gelato cost €3. the quality is very good. the gelato is stored in these steel containers; authentic and not a tourist-trap! the texture of the gelato was amazing, it’s smooth and creamy. i’d also tried the cookies and cream flavour; it was nice. i’d recommend the sololatte (milk), it was outstanding and the 100% chocolate flavour. the 100% chocolate flavour is not too bitter and tastes very rich. a must-try for dark chocolate enjoyers.

it was very crowded when we went (around 5.30pm and 21 december, a sunday.) so it was hard to find seating, although there were plenty available. the cones and cups are easy to bring around to eat while sight seeing matera."

"⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Absolutely the best gelato in Matera! The flavors are fresh, natural, and incredibly delicious – you can really taste the quality in every bite.

We tried mango, melon, and cookies, all three were outstanding. The mango was intense and fruity, the melon refreshing and sweet, and the cookies flavor rich and creamy.

The staff was friendly, the atmosphere charming, and the selection huge. If you're in Matera and love gelato, this place is a must!"

Oliver K.

"This place does the best gelato in Matera. I'm a regular, had x2 4 euro pots today. Everyone is so smiley and polite. The gelato portions are very generous, and they have every flavour you can imagine. Absolutely delicious and so refreshing. And while I'm on holiday in Matera I have to get my gelato fix every day. They open from 5pm on a Wed by the way. Yum, Yum"

Matera city guide: Where to eat, drink, shop and stay

Owned by husband and wife team Leonardo de Angelis and Valeria Vizziello, who moved to southern Italy to open up their own gelateria, i Vizi degli Angeli Laboratorio di Gelateria Artigianale is fantastic for dessert. It makes its own organic ice cream and sorbets every morning, in a range of seasonal flavours. Think milk and lavender for summer and mascarpone and marron glacé in the colder months.

If you have ever stepped onto the main square of Matera, you would have wandered into I Vizi degli Angeliafter witnessing the periodic queues. Delightfully rare gelato flavours are what you’ll get at this gelato laboratory – apple and celery, pineapple, avocado and lemon, red wine, and ricotta. The gelato comes in a cup, cone, soaked in coffee syrup, or even wedged between a slice of bread.

Why you should visit Matera with Kids

The ice creams and sorbets at Il Vizi degli Angeli on Via Ridola are made fresh every morning and we loved some of their more unusual flavours like pine nuts, bergamot or profumo di primavera (milk, thyme and lavender. My new favourites are now pineapple and ginger (a heavenly combination) and asteroide (caramel cookies with huge chunks of caramel biscuits inside).

Our lucky find of the trip was La Taverna del Duca (Antonella Scatigna) in Locorotondo, a Grecian whitewashed hill town in neighboring Puglia. We passed through a dark doorway into a bright, tiny tourist-filled trattoria. Needless to say, I wanted to run out the door, when we were given a laminated, ten page menu with pictures of what was being served for lunch.

Owing to the new popularity of Matera, there are several hotels located within the old caves, including the Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita, with 18 rooms. My wife and I stayed at the Caveoso Hotel on the piazza of the same name. Its limestone walls and starkness are its allure, at night carefully situated lighting gives it a seductive glow.
