Among the first to invest in quality coffee was Canadian-born Brent Jopson, who together with his wife Giulia Gasperini opened Orsonero Coffee at the end of 2016. The decor is played on the light tones of wood and minimalistic style, with minimal seating and a central bar counter for sipping excellent cups. In addition to the various single-origin Gardelli Specialty Coffees at the bar, it's possible to try quality Italian and foreign selections: from Peacocks Coffee Roasters to Five Elephant, from Nero Scuro to Elysian Coffee Roasters, there are many brands that take turns on the shelves of the coffee shop, one better than the other, all treated with the utmost care by Brent himself.

One of the city’s first speciality coffee shops opened in 2016, a time when single-origin coffee beans and aero-press were seen as an innovative, daring concept in the city; fast forward a few years and, despite the sudden response to this trend, OG Orsonero remains a favourite among locals. It was opened by Brent Jopson, who, with his Milanese wife Giulia, moved from Vancouver, bringing a slice of their Canadian cutting-edge culture. The interiors are cool and inviting with no frills, just a pleasant atmosphere to sip your morning flat white with oat milk and pour over coffee or cold brew during the warmer months.

Orsonero is a specialty coffee shop with two locations in Milan. We went to the original location, where we enjoyed a natural pour-over, a cappuccino, and a croissant from Pasticceria Clèa. Orsonero frequently rotates their offering with a vast selection of specialty roasters, including some of our Scandinavian favorites like Coffee Collective, Morgon, La Cabra, and Koppi.

When the couple moved from Vancouver to Milan, they were disappointed to find that specialty coffee was not yet a trend. Determined to bring their love of coffee to the people of Milan, they opened Cafe Orsonero.

They say that you never forget your first love, and this certainly applies to coffee as well. We visited Orsonero, one of the first specialty cafés opened in Milan, in 2018. It was not so popular at the time, yet it already seemed special to us, mainly because of Brent (the Canadian owner and barista) and the delicious coffee he prepared.

The brainchild of husband and wife team, Orsonero was brought to life by Vancouver native Brent Jopson and his Milan-born wife Giulia Gasperini. Orso Nero translates to black bear in English and forms part of the logo for the coffee shop. The place itself is small yet cool and has a nice vibe which is why it’s so popular with the locals.

Orsonero is my absolute favourite coffee spot in Milan, and actually, in the world!. They have two different locations, in Porta Venezia and Risorgimento. They also have great croissants, biscuits, and sometimes, little cakes and Portuguese tarts.

So if you fancy a good coffee break while exploring Milan, stop by Orsonero. Don’t expect to enter a traditional Italian, corner coffee shop. This café could be located in London, New York, Sydney, wherever.
