What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Diners rave about the authentic, homemade Modenese cuisine, particularly praising the fresh pasta dishes and traditional specialties. Many highlight the warm and attentive service, contributing to a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. However, some reviews mention issues with portion sizes and unexpected high charges for antipasti, with one diner experiencing a notable lack of apology for perceived overcharging.
"This restaurant came highly recommended by a friend, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The staff were warm, welcoming, and attentive throughout our visit. On our first night, we had reservations and were blown away by the food—everything was fresh, flavorful, and generously portioned. We enjoyed it so much that we returned a second time without a reservation, showing up right at opening. Despite that, they graciously seated us and once again delivered top-notch service and delicious food. I can’t recommend this place enough!"

"We had the “Salumi – pecorino – marmellata – gnocco” for our entrée, the “Lasagne verdi al forno” and the “Filetto all’aceto balsamico” (a steak in balsamic reduction with potato purée) as mains, and mascarpone and tiramisu for dessert.
Food:
The food was excellent overall. The steak in balsamic reduction was of outstanding quality, with an incredibly rich and flavorful sauce—though the purée was just okay. The lasagna was beautifully prepared, with tender meat and a great balance of flavors and textures.
The entrée was divine! The gnocco paired with prosciutto, cheese, and fig jam was the perfect way to start the meal—simple, yet absolutely delicious.
Desserts were also very good, though not as memorable as the earlier dishes.
Ambience & Service:
The restaurant has a cozy, homemade vibe, and the food genuinely feels like it’s made with love and care. However, the service left something to be desired. When we arrived, despite plenty of empty tables, we were seated by the door, which was fine at first. But as more guests without reservations arrived, they were given more comfortable seating, which felt unfair and detracted from the experience.
Overall:
Great food, especially the steak and entrée, but portions were on the smaller side. Service could use improvement, but we still enjoyed the meal and the quality of the dishes.
Would recommend for the food, with the caveat about the service."

"We very much looked forward to this dining experience, and all went well until we received the check, where we found out that we were charged an exorbitant amount for our appetizers.
Upon arrival we were offered antipasti, and after checking the menu and seeing options for a seemingly-reasonable €15, we accepted and received two plates of meat. We were shocked to see our two antipasti totaled to €90. Our waiter reasoned that each meat on its own was €15 euro, and thus each plate totaled 45 (see photo of plate). This would mean that each individual slice of salame was nearly €3.
Of course, this was partially our fault for not triple-checking, but compared to the other prices (primi being €10, steak secondo €25), along with neighboring tables ordering prosciutto-only antipasti for 15 and receiving arguably an equal-sized plate to our “3-antipasti plate,” it seems clear that we were taken advantage of for being a large group of young American tourists without an expert grasp of the language.
Quite disappointing as the rest of the experience was lovely, but can’t help but feel deceived. I would be very careful with ordering here as a tourist."

Honest cooking doesn't get much better than this: host Danilo has been at the helm for decades and oversees his restaurant with a keen eye and great spirit. The food here is local, terrific, and unpretentious. There's a reason why locals swarm here, and visitors as well.

Weekend Escape: Modena | La Panza Piena
The only open one was Da Danilo, a historic trattoria serving delicious, traditional dishes. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise as we ended up going back to the trattoria more than once because of how much we enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Authentic, old school restaurants with a fridge containing the desserts right in the center of the room and an angolo del bollito are hard to come across these days, so we were even happier to have stumbled across Da Danilo.
The Perfect Modena Day Trip Itinerary
If planning ahead isn’t your strong suit but you still want a delicious meal then I highly recommend visiting Ristorante da Danilo. They serve traditional home cooked food and have incredibly friendly waiters that will explain every last menu item. While bookings are advised here, they are very accommodating, particularly if you arrive early during the lunch period. The tortelloni soaked in balsamico and lasagna verde are highly recommended!
Food, Culture And Cars In Modena, Italy
One of the favourite meals we had was at the popular restaurant, Danilo, where we sampled Modena’s famous lasagne. It was a far lighter dish than I have ever tasted – with countless layers of green pasta followed by a pork dish (the region is famous for the meat). Of course we started it with a platter of cured meat and cheese served with delicious fried puffs of bread called tigella.

Trattoria da Danilo // I enjoyed this spot at the time, but now as I think back I’m realizing it was nothing special?. We sampled: gramigna alla salsiccia and lasagna starters, and a main course of beef filet in balsamic vinegar to share, with a side of roast potatoes. We also shared a dessert of cantuccini soaked in walnut liqueur with mascarpone, which was rather awful.
The Hip Local’s Guide to Modena
Ristorante Da Danilo – This classic spot has been serving traditional delicacies to locals for the past 40 years. It’s particularly enjoyable in the winter, when you can cozy up with a culatello con gnocco followed by tortelloni alla zucca, passatelli in brodo, or gramigna. In the summer, secondi like carpaccio, roast beef, and bresaola are delightful.

Another fantastic spot for traditional Modenese food is Ristorante Da Danilo. Just a short walk from the Duomo, this trattoria is beloved by locals and visitors alike for its hearty, rustic dishes. One must-try here is the handmade tortellini, often served with a simple drizzle of balsamic vinegar that elevates the flavors of the rich, cheesy filling.

Ristorante da Danilo gets mentioned first because it’s the perfect balance of amazing food, local ambiance, and reasonable prices. Their menu is classic Emilia Romagna food, and the star is the ever-popular tortellini in brodo. A clear broth with meat tortellini sounds simple, but the flavors will blow you away.

One of my favourite Modena restaurants, and it seems many people agree as most reviews are overwhelmingly positive. This is a family restaurant, you’ll find lots of groups of happy locals eating at Da Danilo. But if you want to try something unique get the bollito misto, one of the traditional foods of Modena.
