Members of the Condurro family have been creating pizza perfection since 1870 and loyal regulars don’t mind the fact that the menu has just two choices – Margherita and marinara – as both are filling, fabulous and friendly on the wallet.

But a slew of top-notch trattorias, osterias and ristoranti exist right alongside pizza titans like Sorbillo and Da Michele. Drawing on the cornucopia of livestock and produce from the fertile fields and coastal waters of the Campania region — cattle, goats, shellfish, wheat, artichokes, zucchini, figs, citrus fruits and more — these eateries dish out local inventions from mussel soup to homegrown pastas to limoncello.

Neapolitans will rarely order anything other than a margherita or marinara pizza so there is no better place to try them than at Da Michele, which makes nothing but. The wood-fired oven occupies the centre of the restaurant, churning out pizzas at a breathless pace. You get the feeling you have under three minutes to sit, eat and pay but it is well worth the experience and works as a good simple lunch option.

Julia Roberts’s character famously found prayer in India and love in Bali, but she ate pizza at Da Michele. Everything about this place is simple, from the tiled interior to the stripped-down menu with only two options (with or without mozzarella). There’s no question why you’re here: to enjoy perfectly cooked pizza and, perhaps, have some sort of religious experience while you’re at it.

So tucking into a thin-based, raised-crust pizza napoletana at Pizzeria Starita or Da Michele might be as aesthetic a Neapolitan experience as viewing Giuseppe Sanmartino’s Cristo Velato sculpture in the baroque Cappella Sansevero.

Still run by the same family, the more than 150 year old L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele is famed - both locally and internationally - for creating what many people say is the best pizza in all of Napoli. And as Napoli is renowned for being home to the best pizza in the world, it surely follows that Da Michele must the best pizza you can anywhere on God’s green earth?. Whilst their pizzas are undeniably dreamy, had Da Michele not been made internationally famous by the book and film Eat Pray Love, we’re not 100% certain it would be quite so busy; the queues here are longer than anywhere else in the city seemingly irrespective of when you choose to show up.

If you’ve ever seen the film Eat, Pray, Love, then you will fondly recall the moment Julia Roberts struggles to zip up her jeans after a carb-induced frenzy of food tasting around Italy (I know the feels and wholeheartedly believe a little weight gain is a small price to pay for the flavours on offer!) The pizzeria she eats at prior to this point in the film is Pizzeria da Michele, one of Naples most famous pizzas and home to a wetter, less crispy, more doughy type of pizza with plenty of toppings. You’ll pay just a few euros for a sit-down pizza in the casual surroundings. Drinks are of course available too if you wish to make a meal out of it..

Known as the "Eat Pray Love pizzeria" (yes, it was here that Liz Gilbert, and later Julia Roberts in the film version, stuffed her face in the "eat" portion of the marvellous book), this traditional pizzeria enjoys the love of both tourists and locals - and the endless queue is there to prove it. Upon arrival (no reservations available), you take a number and then wait outside with the rest of the crowd until your number is called and you're taken into the relatively modest-looking pizzeria. There is no menu, everyone who visits knows that Da Michele only offers the margherita and the marinara - which makes it by default a vegetarian restaurant!.

Operating since 1870, the pizzeria already has a loyal following but gained even more popularity after being featured in the novel Eat, Pray, Love. There are only two varieties of pizza available here – the Margherita (mozzarella, tomato, and basil) and the Marinara (garlic, tomato and oregano) – but we guarantee that you will not get tired of eating them over and over.

I’m not a big fan of Michele’s pizza: the place is always overcrowded and, after waiting for ages, you need to hurry up eating your long-awaited pizza, which –in turn- is often not properly baked, as the pizza maker had to rush it through the oven. Despite that, this is the most famous pizzeria in Naples, and not because Julia Roberts ate here in “Eat, Pray, Love” -as American tourists usually assume. The place has been well-known since its opening in 1873, which was way before it was featured in a Hollywood movie.

You can huff-cry-rant all you like but this restaurant was handed a generational lifeline when little old Julia Roberts ate here in the dismal hogwash film of the same name. Hollywood ruinations aside, the pizza is spectacularly average. Solid, decent crust, smattering of sauce, plop of (way too) wet cheese, hurled out at record speed so they can accommodate the thousand other arrivals fresh from Bali after a wellness week, aching for some deep carb action to re-align their chakras after the flight.

This is the famous pizzeria where they filmed the adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert’s novel “Eat, Pray, Love” starring Julia Roberts and they even have a photo of her hanging inside the restaurant!. It is renowned as having the “world’s best pizza” and with all the stellar reviews for this place on TripAdvisor, this was one of the first restaurants I tried in Naples. The pizza here is out of this world, literally a slice of heaven that will melt in your mouth!

Let’s begin by addressing what some might view as inconveniences: the restaurant embraces a rustic, nearly spartan “no frills” atmosphere; it does not accept reservations, requiring everyone to wait in line (we encountered a queue of 40 people!); and it offers just two kinds of pizza. Nothing but the pizza Margherita and pizza marinara here, using only fiordilatte cow´s milk and sweet, enticing San Marzano tomatoes. So why do we recommend this place?

Everyone will stop fighting for a second and suggest you should at least go and have a look at Da Michele. A look is probably all you’ll get, because – since Jullia Roberts ate here in ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ – getting a table involves leaving your name, standing outside in a frenzied crowd, recognising the mangled Italian version of your name and fighting through said crowd before someone nabs your table. Also know that Da Michele is Serious Pizza.

A crowded, tiny, white-colored building with a spread of tables and a pizzeria where you can see the chef’s magic being done right in front of you, how can you resist the charm of L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele?. You’ll be able to spot it on Via Cesare Sersale; just look out for the massive queue leading out onto the street. I’ve lined up here for more than an hour a handful of times, and I don’t regret it for a second; the pizza is that good.

One is Antica Pizzeria da Michele, which became a destination after being featured in the bestselling novel “Eat, Pray, Love.” Then there is Pizzeria Trianon, one of the most iconic in Naples; it’s three floors of pizza paradise. Obviously, gelato has always made for the perfect “after pizza party,” even in winter. The juices definitely pool in the center as you eat (take a look at the photo up at the top of this post), but the edges and underbelly still retain a thin, thin layer of crispness that adds textural contrast to the whole deal. It's a really exquisite pie.

It actually took me a while to get to this pizzeria because I was never in the mood to wait in a long line and I still probably wouldn’t recommend it over others. Yes, the pizza is excellent and the atmosphere is traditional (verging on austere, but it’s a very classic blue collar place).

Still, the operation is simple and the choices are simple: pizza margherita (with tomato, mozzarella and basil) or marinara (only tomato sauce; very simple but also delicious).

I actually remember when Liz (yup, I knew her when….) went down to Naples for the weekend and she really was completely blown away by the pizza here. As was I the first time I went.

I did end up trying Sorbillo and Da Michele (the place Julia Roberts swooned over her margherita), but both disappointed. I needed a towel to clean up the dripping wet mozzarella di bufala, and the crusts left me wanting more. A trip to Caiazzo solved that (you’ll see in the video), with a trip to the Valhalla of pizza: Pepe in Grani.

I loved Da Michele, we only had to wait 10 minutes to get a seat and the menu consisted of only two choices; double cheese or normal.

If you don’t have enough time to sit down and enjoy your pizza, you can opt to order for Pizza Fritta which is technically fried pizza which is ready to be enjoyed on the move.
