Reviews Summary

L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele is a legendary Naples institution, drawing crowds for its simple yet exceptional Margherita and Marinara pizzas, lauded for their perfect crust and delicious toppings. While the wait can be long, most find it completely worth it for the authentic experience and unbelievable value. Some minor complaints mention the plastic cups for drinks and the sometimes overwhelming tipping culture, but these are overshadowed by the overall deliciousness and historic charm of the pizzeria.

"Absolutely worth the wait — even if it’s a long one!
My tip: go around 12 PM, when the line is shorter — we were seated inside within 10 minutes. The interior is spacious and keeps an authentic, slightly old-school charm that adds to the local feel.

And the pizza was incredible.
The tomato sauce was rich and flavorful, the mozzarella was perfect, but the highlight was the beautifully leopard-spotted dough — soft, chewy, and full of character. The portion size was huge (even larger than the plate!), and for the price, it’s an amazing deal.

The inside is also pleasantly cool — a huge plus on a hot Neapolitan day — though it does make the mozzarella firm up a little faster. One thing I missed was a house wine option; it would’ve complemented the meal perfectly.

Bottom line: a must-try spot in Naples."

Nida özeçoğlu

"The pizza was cheap and delicious. We couldn’t get a spot at evening so we decided to go in the morning. There was already a queue waiting for the opening of the restaurant. We ate a few pizzas in the city, but this one felt really special. The crust was tasty and the ingredients were good. I would recommend to order 2 different types of pizza and share it with your friend/girlfriend. The only drawback are the plastic-paper cups, which we received for the drinks. Would be great if they could use the glass cups instead."

Bartosz Król

"This place is legendary. The lines are long and the staff are doing their best to get you pizza, but don't expect fine dining experience. The reward of 6-euro pizzas from one of the world's best pizzeria will be well worth the wait!
For best experience, I would recommend booking a hotel near the pizzeria. Prepare to line up for 1-2 hours for takeout / takeaway. Do yourself a favor and bring it back to a nice calm place in your hotel, where you can truly indulge the best pizzas in the world."

You may recognize Da Michele from the movie Eat, Pray, Love, but for more than 140 years before Julia Roberts arrived, this place was a culinary reference point. Despite offering only four types of pizza—marinara (tomato, garlic, and oregano), Margherita (tomato, mozzarella, and basil), cosacca (tomato, pecorino, and basil), and marita (half marinara, half Margherita)—plus a small selection of drinks, it still manages to draw long lines. The low prices may have something to do with it, but the pizza itself suffers no rivals, so customers are good-humored while waiting.

A cameo in the movie Eat Pray Love propelled this phenomenally popular pizzeria to even greater heights but at heart, it’s still the same, family-run, marble-tabled pizza parlour it always was. Members of the Condurro family have been creating pizza perfection since 1870 and loyal regulars don’t mind the fact that the menu has just two choices – Margherita and marinara – as both are filling, fabulous and friendly on the wallet.

Neapolitans will rarely order anything other than a margherita or marinara pizza so there is no better place to try them than at Da Michele, which makes nothing but. The wood-fired oven occupies the centre of the restaurant, churning out pizzas at a breathless pace. Julia Roberts’s character famously found prayer in India and love in Bali, but she ate pizza at Da Michele. Everything about this place is simple, from the tiled interior to the stripped-down menu with only two options (with or without mozzarella). Still run by the same family, the more than 150 year old L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele is famed - both locally and internationally - for creating what many people say is the best pizza in all of Napoli. And as Napoli is renowned for being home to the best pizza in the world, it surely follows that Da Michele must the best pizza you can anywhere on God’s green earth?. Whilst their pizzas are undeniably dreamy, had Da Michele not been made internationally famous by the book and film Eat Pray Love, we’re not 100% certain it would be quite so busy; the queues here are longer than anywhere else in the city seemingly irrespective of when you choose to show up.

If you’ve ever seen the film Eat, Pray, Love, then you will fondly recall the moment Julia Roberts struggles to zip up her jeans after a carb-induced frenzy of food tasting around Italy (I know the feels and wholeheartedly believe a little weight gain is a small price to pay for the flavours on offer!) The pizzeria she eats at prior to this point in the film is Pizzeria da Michele, one of Naples most famous pizzas and home to a wetter, less crispy, more doughy type of pizza with plenty of toppings. You’ll pay just a few euros for a sit-down pizza in the casual surroundings. Drinks are of course available too if you wish to make a meal out of it..

Known as the "Eat Pray Love pizzeria" (yes, it was here that Liz Gilbert, and later Julia Roberts in the film version, stuffed her face in the "eat" portion of the marvellous book), this traditional pizzeria enjoys the love of both tourists and locals - and the endless queue is there to prove it. Upon arrival (no reservations available), you take a number and then wait outside with the rest of the crowd until your number is called and you're taken into the relatively modest-looking pizzeria. Both types are cooked in a wood-burning oven until the soft crust is crisply singed around the edges.

The best restaurants in Naples: 10 delicious spots to bookmark

Although many options are widely available throughout the city, most Neapolitans only recognise margherita or marinara (without mozzarella) as genuinely great pizza. That’s very much the case at L’antica Pizzeria da Michele, a famous restaurant that now has additional (albeit inferior) outposts in London, Manchester and Amsterdam. At this tiny pizzeria, the décor doesn’t seem to have changed much since 1870, when the site first opened, service is brusque but swift to help queue times as no reservations are taken, and just pizza margherita or marinara are offered.

I’m not a big fan of Michele’s pizza: the place is always overcrowded and, after waiting for ages, you need to hurry up eating your long-awaited pizza, which –in turn- is often not properly baked, as the pizza maker had to rush it through the oven. Despite that, this is the most famous pizzeria in Naples, and not because Julia Roberts ate here in “Eat, Pray, Love” -as American tourists usually assume. The Margherita pie is a little firmer than the true Neapolitan style you'll see at Da Michele, but to my mind, it's the perfect level of soupiness to crispness.
