Da Gemma manages to meld fine dining with a relaxed atmosphere, making use of crisp white-linen tablecloths, artfully plated dishes, and a friendly, warm staff. The restaurant, one of Amalfi’s oldest outposts, has innovated without losing touch of the traditions that are fiercely held in this part of Italy. Seafood is the star of the menu, featured in appetizers, pastas, and entrées.

You could spend a whole afternoon exploring La Scuderia del Duca, an incredible boutique full of papers, prints, and etchings, followed by one of the best meals you're likely to eat — in Italy or anywhere — at da Gemma. This was a Michelin-esque surprise, complete with a reinterpretation of the classic Caprese salad, as well as a pleasant terrace setting overlooking the bustling street below.

The entrance is off-center, but the view of the Cathedral from the beautiful terrace is unparalleled. Timeless dishes include the Grand Crudo, a platter of carpaccios, tartares, and marinated fish, or the traditional risotto with raw prawn finish and a final lemon zest. Then there’s the fish soup, perhaps the icon of the place, which should be booked along with the table.

In front of Da Maria, looking upwards, you will see a balcony that overlooks the Duomo of Amalfi. That ‘s where you need to go if you want to enjoy the best cuisine of the Amalfi revisited in an original way thanks to the expert hands of Chef Salvatore Milano. Try the fish soup and the genovese sauce, possibly sitting on the terrace watching the world passing by.

Terrazza Duomo is our new favorite restaurant in Amalfi, which was established by the excellent former chef of Da Gemma in 2021. It is situated on the roof top of the Hotel Centrale opposite the Duomo. The view on the Duomo, which is one of the most photographed places in Italy, is spectacular as well as the food.

This was our one big splurge meal in Amalfi, and while the food was very good, the service was very slow. It took an age to get the wine brought to the table, but when it finally arrived it was nice. To eat, we both went for Nonna’s ‘pasta alla genovese’ to start – similar to beef stew – which was delicious.

Make sure you book in advance in order to get a table outdoors which is definitely the way to go if possible. You will find old-school service with super attention to detail. As for food, you should go with the fritto misto which is lightly battered seafood.

Da Gemma is an elegant and high-class restaurant above the shops in Amalfi. It has a beautiful terrace, open in the summer to overlook the bustle of Amalfi main street. When it is raining, the terrace is closed with a ‘see through’ cover.

Get lost between the streets and the panoramic gardens and, if you didn’t find the tickets for a jazz concert (Ravello is the “city of music”), go back to Amalfi and dine by Da Gemma, impeccable service and high quality cuisine.
