What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mazzo is celebrated for its modern Roman cuisine and vibrant atmosphere, drawing praise for its inventive dishes and excellent natural wine selection. Diners frequently commend the friendly and knowledgeable staff, making for a memorable experience. However, some have noted disappointment with certain main courses and challenges with phone reservations.
"Mazzo is hands down the best meal I had in Rome. This place stands out from the usual rustic spots around the city—it's cool, modern, and exactly the kind of place you'd bring friends who appreciate both style and substance. The atmosphere is sleek and energetic, perfect for a lively night out without the traditional old-world décor.
The wine list is on point, with excellent pairings that elevate their bold and inventive dishes. The pasta? Pure perfection. Cooked to a toothsome al dente, it might be a touch firm for some, but for me, it hit the perfect Italian note. Each bite was a masterclass in how pasta should be done—brimming with flavor and authenticity.
The staff at Mazzo are fantastic—friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about the menu. They guided me through my selection of wine with care, making sure I got the most out of my experience. Their warm hospitality made the entire evening feel special.
Mazzo is seriously changing the game for dining in Rome. The mix of cool vibes and amazing food is such a nice change from the usual spots with the same old dishes, and it's 100% worth adding to your list if you're into good eats. Honestly, I'm not the only one who thinks so—other reviews online are raving about how Mazzo nails that blend of classic and modern, and I couldn't agree more."

"We chose this place after reading through some great reviews and had a lot of excitement: the service was unassuming and fast. We really enjoyed the starters, all seasoned well. The main courses were big disappointment. The fried beef which was very dry and with no seasoning, and pasta which was almost mushy and under seasoned. The desserts were sickly but the chocolate mousse was great. With the disappointing main courses, I am two minded in recommending this place but overall there are good cooking techniques so perhaps we chose the wrong dishes."

"Wow! Totally surprised and oh so delicious food they served. At first, you don’t expect from the outside because it’s in the san Lorenzo area with full of graffiti but when you go inside the ambiance is heart warming, modern interiors, clean spacious and which has cozy warm lights. The service is great , staff are very friendly and what I am excited about are their scrumptious menu. Our favourites are the lettuce dish, the fried beef trife, pork belly in soya and of course the dessert lemon 🍋 🍮 with melted meringue 🍨 🫶🏻 definitely worth to dine to celebrate with friends or couples date."

41 Best Restaurants in Rome, According to a Local Expert
This popular trattoria has had a glow up, reopening in the up-and-coming San Lorenzo district after a five year hiatus. The 12-seat communal table has been replaced with an entire restaurant seating plan, but the menu remains as good as ever—with chef Baccannelli reinventing classics, like fried tripe with grated pecorino cheese. This is big, hearty Roman food: the kind of place you want to fall into after a morning hike.
11 of the best restaurants in Rome
In the beginning it was a small venue with a single ten-seat pallet table in the suburb of Centocelle. Then, after a five-year break that saw owners Francesca Barreca and Marco Baccanelli opening pop-up restaurants around the world, Mazzo reopened its doors at the end of 2023 in the hip San Lorenzo district. Housed in a former bakery, it features a proper seating plan, a music corner with a vast vinyl collection and a striking wine cellar in a former bread oven.
5 Restaurants in Rome Only Locals Know About
Over the years, the duo’s style has matured, and as they have become more grounded, their mastery of south-central Italian flavors has made their tiny restaurant in Centocelle, Mazzo, a favorite of local food writers and chefs. Getting there is a trek, but dishes like oxtail terrine and stuffed lamb rolls, which balance tradition and innovation, make the journey to Rome’s eastern periphery absolutely worth the effort.
