Mercato Centrale is a real blockbuster: 18 artisanal food stands line the perimeter of the Cappa Mazzoniana, in Termini Train Station, a monumental hall with 100-foot vaulted ceilings. There are a lot of choices: pizza by the slice, burgers, trapizzini, and more. The crowd is busy and boisterous.

Opened in 2014, the sprawling, sparkling indoor market on the lower level of the station has top-quality artisanal food stands. This bustling cafeteria-style option located on on the back end of Termini station (walk through COIN department store or go outside and walk on the side of the train station and use the side entrance should you need fresh air) offers a wide array of freshly prepared dishes at affordable prices.

This option is always bustling with people from different parts of the world, but that's mostly because it's connected to the Termini Station, the largest/most central train/metro hub in all of Rome. Despite often having to fight your way through the throngs of travelers, this market is well worth the time. It's a zone for restaurants and street food as opposed to purveyors of produce, although there are some fine bakeries, gelaterias, and delis proffering all kinds of delicious cheeses, prosciuttos, and salamis.

Mercato Centrale – the same brilliant concept behind Mercato Centrale in Florence has now arrived in Rome in the most convenient location at the Termini train station. Stalls of local food producers and chefs offer a chance to sample the best of Roman cuisine all day long, with continuous hours (another convenience, especially for families), including fried artichokes, the best butcher of Rome (go for the steak), seafood pizza, gelato, and trapizzini (a type of streetfood–the perfect snack).

This is now home to the fabulous Mercato Centrale, one of the best new generation multi-vendor food halls or markets I have seen around the world. Also, the best way to get into Rome from the airport is a train to Termini, and this is the closest 5-Star to the station. It’s just far enough so it doesn’t feel near a train station, but I was able to walk with my rolling checked bag to the hotel straight from the train in less than 10 minutes.

Walk all the way to the far end of the station through the department store and past the car rental offices and you will find the Mercato Centrale. In the middle of more than 20 different stands is the Luigi Moretti beer house that has a small election of commercial and craft beers on tap and a nice selection of bottled craft beers. Food options range from Roman artichokes to Japanese Ramen with pizza, pasta, and gelato in-between.

If you arrive hungry into Termini train station from the airport, Mercato Centrale could be the first place you eat in Rome. Happily, it’s a gourmet food hall of a kind you just won’t find at, say, Euston. It’s got something to sate every appetite: alongside a coffee shop and beer house, you can find empanadas, ramen, gyozas and some more classically Italian options, like Sabato Sessa’s sfogliatella shop.

Mercato Centrale has become one of the go-to spots for foodies. It’s a one stop shop for all tastes and food needs – here you can find everything from sweets, to pizza, to vegan meals, and more, without forgetting about trapizzini, pasta, sushi and fresh seafood. While the first floor is perfect for casual dining, the second floor is used to house special events and culinary experiences.

Open since October 2016, the market is the product of the team behind Florence’s Mercato Centrale and is a great addition to the station. It’s like an upscale, food court that’s open from 8 am to midnight every day.
