Reviews Summary
Trattoria Da Enzo al 29 is celebrated for its authentic Roman cuisine and lively, intimate atmosphere, often drawing long queues of eager diners. While many rave about the exceptional pasta dishes like Carbonara and Cacio e Pepe, and memorable desserts, some find the wait time extensive for the experience. Service can be attentive, but occasionally overwhelming during peak hours.
"Hidden Gem Alert! This cozy spot, cleverly utilizing every inch of its indoor and outdoor space, is clearly a local favorite. We lucked out by walking right in, but a substantial line quickly formed, a testament to its popularity. The service was top-notch, and the food? Absolutely divine! Getting a peek into the kitchen and watching the two chefs in action was an added bonus. When asked for a dessert recommendation, the enthusiastic response was simply that both were excellent – a delightful dilemma we'll gladly face on our next visit. This restaurant is a must-try!"

"I came around 6:45pm on a Thursday night with my partner for dinner and the line was already VERY long despite a 6:30pm dinner service opening time(social media seems to have made this a very popular spot recently for tourists). We waited about an hour and 15 minutes. During that time, servers passed out samples and took drink orders while people waited in line which was very nice. We ordered the olive oil and bread, ricotta and homemade and jam and the fried artichoke. The olive oil and bread was very fresh and you could tell was made in house. Similarly, the ricotta and jam were very good as well. Only thing I would suggest is maybe a little salt for the olive oil. The artichoke was good as well. For our main courses, we ordered 2 pasta plates and meatballs. They were good as well although the bacon had a little too much fat and one of the meatballs had a piece of eggshell in it. Service was very good and the atmosphere was very lively."

"On the first evening of arrival, picked up this place based on reviews and recommendations on social channels. One could see the stretched waiting line due to its popularity - at 6pm. It took us nearly two hours to get a table. Waiting-in-line guests could order some drinks from servers. Finally, we were hosted by a friendly waiter who could speak out common words in several languages. Great dishes!"

This archetypal trattoria is the exception to the rule about making reservations—because they don’t accept them. But it’s worth the wait for the sublime tonnarelli cacio e pepe or rigatoni alla carbonara, served quickly and efficiently in this jovial family-run spot on a cobblestone street in Trastevere. The tables are packed in tightly, and if you come alone, you’ll be seated with another solo diner, so come ready to socialize.

Kick things off at Da Enzo with an order of sourdough bread and ricotta. The pastas are all very good, but it’s the mains that truly dazzle. Don’t miss the polpette (meatballs), a dreamy mix of beef, mortadella ham, and pecorino cheese served in a thick tomato sauce.

A Very Subjective List of the Best Places to Eat in Rome (2024 Update)
When I want to bring an out-of-town friend to my favorite Roman trattoria, I go to Da Enzo al 29 in Trastevere. Every time I go, I curse myself a little bit for writing about it, because the line is always ridiculously long, and this is one of the very few restaurants in Rome that doesn’t take reservations, but when I finally sit down and bite into a forkful of their tonarelli cacio e pepe, I remember why it’s worth the wait. The tonarelli are fresh and homemade, but they’re hearty enough to stand up to the thick, creamy sauce.

Trastevere: Da Enzo Via dei Vascellari, 29, tel +39 06 5812 260 info@daenzoal29.com On the quiet side of Trastevere near the Tiber Island, this little osteria serves simple seasonal Roman fare with great attention paid to the raw materials. Last time I ate there I started with La Gricia – spaghetti with panfried pork cheek (a sort of an Amatriciana without the tomatoes) which as fave were in season, had a handful of Rome’s favourite beans tossed through it. There is always a queue so try going early or late for lunch.

For traditional Cucina Romana (Roman cuisine), the best place to go to is Da Enzo. It's literally a hole-in-the-wall with maybe about 10 or 12 tables. Da Enzo definitely does up the most mind-blowing carciofi alla giudia (Jewish style fried artichokes) and keeps it real with their classic pasta dishes like carbonara (egg and pork cheek), amatriciana (tomato and pork cheek) and cacio e pepe (pecorino cheese and pepper) and local offal dishes like tripe and braised oxtail (coda alla vaccinara).

However "La Scala in Trastevere" is a long standing dependable place, Trattoria da Enzo 29 is one of those "famous" places that suffered, but seems to have pulled out of it and has decent pasta dishes. Tonnarello and their sister restaurants are popular, decent food, casual, not spectacular, but better than the tourist fare and reasonably priced. It is worth wandering through the streets in the Trastevere during the day, then go back at night to witness the transformation.
