Osteria La Sosta di Violante

This is likely one of my favorite restaurants in Siena, my go-to when I’m craving traditional Tuscan cooking that is never boring, made with quality ingredients and good dose of comfort. If I had to choose one dish to order every time I come here it would be, without hesitation, the pici pasta with a knife-cut pork neck meat sauce— a hearty and filling dish that delivers immediate joy. Aside from the pici pasta, dishes like pappa al pomodoro with Cinta pork cheek and the cacio e pepe risotto with crumbled Cinta Senese sausage are two “comfort dishes” to definitely try.

For true gourmets can be a good solution to choose a place that is also a wine bar, where you can taste the best wines of Siena, such as Brunello di Montalcino and Nobile di Montepulciano. La Sosta di Violante, at via di Pantaneto 115, is very popular among the Senese and has a magic atmosphere, due to the vaults in brick and wooden furnishings. The menu includes both Tuscan speciies (such as pici with ragu di capocollo), both dishes like salads or grilled meat.

We hebben inmiddels bijna alles wat op de kaart staat geproefd en alles is even verrukkelijk. Neem vooraf in elk geval de gefrituurde mozzarellabolletjes en laat je daarna verleiden door een van de klassieke pasta’s of de risotto, die hier altijd anders maar altijd even lekker is.

This was the first restaurant we went to and oh my god did it deliver!. It was on our list of best restaurants in Siena before we got there and then our Airbnb Host also suggested it, so we knew we had to try it. It is clearly a locals place and we do suggest reservations, we stayed right near here and every time we walked by, they were packed.

End your trip to Siena at the understated Osteria La Sosta di Violante. It may not look like much from the outside but the food and not the decoration is what people come here for. Spend the evening working through the antipasti, primi and secondi piatti before enjoying a dessert, all washed down with well-chosen wines and strong coffees.

Osteria Enoteca Sotto Le Fonti on the Via Esterna di Fontebranda --- It's a little trek but we thought it was worth it, twice. Small family-run place. You go through a city gate (the one between the Duomo and the Saint Catherine cathedral) and down the hill past the Parking S. Caterina.

It’s a little out of the way, but this restaurant is well worth the extra effort. It’s located off Via di San Giovanni, between Piazza del Campo and Piazza del Mangia. The food here is excellent, with a daily menu based on what their local suppliers can provide.

Sosta di Violente - Offering a more traditional atmosphere this place offers some Italian home-cooked dishes done right from pici al ragu, bistecca alla Fiorentina, to Pappa al pomodoro . Don't miss the mozzarelline fritte con marmellata for dessert.
