This small bar and deli is another must-visit spot on the fringes of Ortigia's historic market. You can choose from a generously stuffed panini, a plate of the local antipasti, or a small plate of whatever is in season from the sea. Be sure to visit the deli before you leave to stock on food-based souvenirs to take home.

Sarris recommends eating at Fratelli Burgio, the salumeria right next door to Caseificio Borderi. Fratelli Burgio makes excellent salads and sandwiches, but it's especially renowned for its charcuterie boards. I picked up a few bars in a shop called Fratelli Burgio, which was just next to Caseificio Borderi in the Siracusa market where we got the wonderful sandwiches. They had at least a dozen different flavours, and all the ones I looked at were vegan and were made with the simplest of ingredients. In fact, the ingredients list generally contained just three items: cacao, sugar and whatever else was used to provide the particular flavour of that bar (lemon zest, orange zest, star anise, etc.).

The little island of Ortigia, the historic heart of the city of Siracusa, is one of Sicily’s most picturesque corners, with a discovery waiting around every corner. Fratelli Burgio – This salumeria has been in the market of Ortigia for generations. The last time I was there it was closed up, but I just read that they have re-opened just down the street, near the port. They are known for their incredible tagliere, tasting boards full of cured meats, cheeses, and cured vegetables and fish.

Lunches at the market at La Salumeria Fratelli Burgio & dinner at Retro La Locanda were highlights. Also coffee after dinner in Piazza Duomo & Piazza Archimede. We had 48 hours in Ragusa & visited Modica by rail in the morning, arranging a taxi to the station & on return walking back via the Cathedral in Ragusa Superiore.

BEST FOR: Sharing platters, a speedy lunch, Sicily’s finest meats and cheeses. There is something for everyone at this Siracusan institution which has consolidated its position at the end of marketplace!. It began as a humble salami shop in the mid–1900s and has since grown into a thriving delicatessen and restaurant.

But the one spot that is absolutely not-freaking-to-be-missed, you really and truly MUST GO is Fratelli Burgio. It’s a market shop, located right in the corner (next to the sea), that also happens to serve lunch until 3:30PM. I wish it was open late because we literally would’ve gone every night for dinner, too.

Also located right next to the market, Fratelli Burgio is a trendy spot for a quick bite. They specialize in curating the best that Sicily has to offer, from quality salumi at the deli counter to large platters filled with all types of yummy specialties, such as jams and preserves, cheese, caponata and crudo.

While it started out as a shop selling cheese, cured meats, and other things to eat, it’s become more of a sit-down place. It’s known for its platters of great nibbles, including various salads. A wonderful place for a light lunch.
