Reviews Summary

Bar Turrisi is a famously unique establishment celebrated for its audacious and humorous phallic-themed decor. While the decor is a major draw, many visitors also praise the delicious food, particularly the pizza and almond wine, as well as the stunning views from its terraces. Some reviewers note that drinks can be relatively expensive.

"What a fabulously fun themed bar in Castelmola, the only few open when I got to the town. My friend said I should go for the decor and the views but as it was dark & rainy I missed this but the food made up for it. They only served pizza as it was low season & late but it's one of the best pizzas I've had (that's coming from a non-pizza fan). Also the prices are super reasonable for this area."

Phuong Nguyen

"Very interesting place with a lot of different iconography of the manhood all around.

The art in the design is carefully placed in a way you will be surprised, the views are awesome, the food is good and great service.

It is a good place for family and friends and if you go the restroom you will see murale with different ancient Italian escenes."

Dario Camacho

"Very nice bar with a thorough homage to fertility. We had almond wine and espresso. Both very tasty. We didn’t have any food, but were told by others that they have great cake here."

Nightlife in Sicily

Truly one of the most infamous places to have a drink in all of Italy, this humorous bar has cozy nooks and crannies on three levels—all decked out with phallic images of every size, shape, and color imaginable, from bathroom wall murals inspired by the brothels of ancient Greece to giant wooden carvings honoring Dionysus. If you can get past the design choices, the roof terrace has extraordinary views of Taormina and the coast, while a limited selection of hearty pasta dishes are served inside.

Castelmola: an excursion from Taormina

If you are of a robust disposition, one of the strangest sights of Castelmola is the historic Bar Turrisi and its phallic-themed décor. Celebrating in flamboyant style the ancient emblem of fertility and luck, and also the more risqué and libertine aspects of Taormina’s history, the bar’s interior is filled with phalluses in every medium and of every size, from large stone sculptures to the bathroom taps. The bar has balconies overlooking the pretty little village piazza, and serves granitas and almond wine, “elixir of love”, which you can also buy in souvenir bottles (not all phallic-shaped) to take away.

Castelmola, Sicily – Medieval Village

One of the most famous and most eccentric attractions is the Turrisi Bar which has a bizarre display of phalluses in wood, clay and ceramic – a sign of abundance and a good omen as per the Hellenic tradition – in every size, from large stone sculptures to bathroom taps, paintings and wooden carvings. This ancient emblem of fertility is celebrated here in flamboyant style, and among the gifts available from the shop is the locally produced almond wine in phallic-shaped bottles, referred to, of course, as the “elixir of love”.

Side Trips from Taormina

Either route involves an hour or so of fairly strenuous walking, but once at the top, stop at Castelmola's Bar Turrisi (Piazza Duomo 19; tel. 0942/28181; daily 10am–midnight, until 2am weekends) for a glass of vino alla mandorla (almond wine) and a look at its peculiar art collection. If that’s more walking than you care to do, you can also drive up to Castelmola (park below the village and walk in) or take an orange bus that runs more or less hourly from Porta Messina (2.20€ round-trip).

Castelmola and the Turrisi bar in Sicily 🛄

Continuing from Piazza Sant'Antonio, you arrive inside the heart of the village where it is Piazza Duomo with the church of St. Nicholas of Bari, rebuilt in the 30s; right in this square we find one of the cult places of Sicily or the Bar Turrisi, famous for a rather particular feature: everything that is found inside this bar, built on 4 levels, is phallic in shape to celebrate man's virility and fecundity.
