Turn right out of Caffè San Carlo, along the portico'd arcade – the city has some 18km of the things, built, in part, so the kings and queens of the Savoy dynasty could take their daily passeggiata without running the risk of getting the royal barnet wet – and you'll come to Caffè Torino (piazza San Carlo 204, +39 011 545118), 80 years younger but scarcely less glam. You can't miss the gold bull inlaid in the pavement outside: legend has it that good luck comes to those who step on this particular bullock's bollocks, so I give it my best shot then step inside. The place is heaving with a large, loud American tour party.

Established in 1903, Caffè Torino encapsulates Italian Art Nouveau design (or, as they call it, Stile Liberty). There is a showstopping curved staircase with swirling iron ballistrades, an elaborate metal frame window travelling from floor to ceiling and curvaceous chairs, mirrors, sconces and statues with typical floral motifs. Historically, it has counted significant Turinese figures, such as writer Cesare Pavese, among its regulars, and also attracted notable out-of-towners such as Eva Gardner and Brigitte Bardot.

Caffè Torino: Among the city’s most famous old-school cafés, it’s also among Briars’s favorite spots to score classic vermouth cocktails, such as the Americano and Negroni Sbagliato.

In a beautiful interiors of Bell Époque of Caffe’ Torino such personalities like Cesare Pavese, Ludovico Enaudi, Ava Gardner or Brigitte Bardot, even members of Savoy family used to relax. While Pasticceria Stratta located on the opposite side of San Carlo square attracts with its traditional wooden façade that since 1836 hasn’t changed the image and for me it looks more like a picture, a piece of art, then a simple assortment presentation. This confectionary shop used to deliver sweets for governmental receptions in times when Turin was the capital of Italy, and today it spoils palates of the most picky gourmets.

Whereas Andrea doesn’t touch coffee I was super excited about trying out the local Torino coffee delicacy, bicerin – a mixture of espresso, drinking chocolate, and milk served layered in a small glass. We plonked ourselves down in a prime ‘people watching’ table at Stratta, excited about bicerin and a pistachio cream filled brioche (buttery croissant). Turns out we would have to sit and watch a local wedding whilst drinking black tea, cappuccino, and some pretty good cannoli’s.

After stepping on the brass bull that stands in front of the entrance and traditionally brings good luck (you will understand where to insist by seeing how worn the silhouette is) you enter the early 20th century rooms of the Caffè Torino where you can enjoy the classic “Bicerin d' Cavour”, prepared with chocolate, coffee and unwhipped heavy cream. Some of the other places where you can find a great bicerin are the historic Caffè Torino and the century-old Pasticceria Stratta pastry shop in the scenic Piazza San Carlo. For a gluttony take, you can try it at the old Gelateria Pepino (Piazza Carignano 8) or at Caffè Mulassano in the central Piazza Castello. Here the bicerin coffee is served in two variations, none of them following the traditional recipes but if you are into trying new twists, you can give it a try.

Caffè Torino has been opened since 1903 and is well known to have some of the best cocktails in Torino. I enjoyed starting my day there with my morning cappuccino and a savory sandwich before starting my day. Since Torino is famous for its chocolates, it was difficult finding a place without sweets for breakfast, so I was very happy to have found savory sandwiches instead.

There are 3 important historic cafes in Piazza San Carlo: Caffè Torino, Stratta and Caffè San Carlo. Stratta is the only one that closes early – at 7.30pm (and closed Mondays) – so it’s a breakfast, lunch and aperitivo place. All of them offer outdoor seating so if you have good weather, it’s just the best place to sit and watch the Turin world go by.

If we talk about the work ambience at Caffe Turin, then the place offers one of the most vibrant and energetic atmospheres. It is a historic Italian pastry shop that has been in operation for over 100 years. Once you visit the cafe, you can see beautiful ornate chandeliers, patterned wallpaper, along with yummy desserts including tiramisu and cannoli.

Opened in 1903, Caffé Torino was the favourite cafe of the Savoy family during their reign, and its Belle Époque atmosphere is still fitting for a king. It is located on Piazza San Carlo, one of the most beautiful squares of the city centre. Here you can find delicacies prepared by local masters, from coffee to pastries and ice cream.

With its wooden fireplaces, velvet upholstery and painted medallions Caffè Torino looks like a cozy, homely salon. You can’t miss the martini sign overhead at Caffe Torino on Piazza San Carlo. A staple in the city for over a century years, it first opened in 1903 and had an expansion in the Thirties and renovation in the Nineties. Inside you’ll find lots of Belle Époque details, including the sweeping staircase centrepiece.

Take a break at one of Torino’s oldest restaurants, Caffè Torino. For over one-hundred years, the eatery has provided an elegant dining room to compliment its finely crafted drinks, sandwiches, pastry and renown chocolates. Ornate, wrought-iron staircases, chandeliers, gilded mirrors and marble adorn the place.

If cioccolata calda (hot chocolate) is your thing, one of the oldest chocolate houses in town, Caffè Torino, is on the square. Take your time and enjoy a drink as good as or better than cappuccino. Head on to Piazza Castello with its Monumental Palazzo Madama.

Another famous local cafe is Caffè Torino, where Eva liked to drink a cocktail Gardner. Caffè Mulassano serves the most delicious coffee in Turin, while the Teapot Tisaneria Con Cucina is a favorite place for both tourists and locals to spend their evenings.

Sweet vermouth was invented in Torino, so naturally you gotta have an aperitivo, so wonderfully described by An American in Rome here. This is one of (the many) grand art deco cafes in Torino. So gorgeous and not just loaded with tourists.

The square is surrounded by covered walkways that house some of the city’s oldest cafes, including the famous Caffe Torino and Caffe San Carlo. At the far end of the piazza are two churches – Santa Cristina and San Carlo Borromeo.

In the name of tradition, head to Caffè Torino on the corner of Piazza San Carlo, which has been serving Negronis since 1903. For a contemporary spin, La Drogheria on Piazza Vittorio Veneto regularly draws in the crowds.

The classic coffee restaurant 'Torino' (1903) whose logo (see top image above) just happens to be both the symbol of the city and Torino's other football team 'Torino'. It is here you can taste the true gianduiotto.

Oh my God, I now realized I stepped on the bull, but maybe not on its private parts. That’s why it didn’t work. 😀 I only took a couple of photos of the beautiful Art Nouveau decor and did not order anything here.

And Caffe Torino, one of the longest running cafes in Turin that’s a little old school, but definitely worthy of at least one stop in to experience their style of service.
