What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Al Timon is celebrated for its exceptional meat dishes, particularly the steaks, which many reviewers hail as among the best they've ever had. The unique canal-side seating and cozy atmosphere are also significant draws. However, some patrons have noted inconsistencies in service, occasional issues with drink orders, and a few found the food to be average or portions lacking.
"We went in the night before Easter to scope the place out and to see if they were open on Easter, talked with a very nice lady who told us they opened for lunch earlier than normal so not a lot of people knew this. We did just that, she told us we had to wait to see if the owner would give us a table...not sure what would have made him say no, but he didn't. We sat down and ordered. My wife likes her steak a little more cooked so once the board got out to the table she put her portion on a plate and they cooked it more for her. This is definitely a place we will be returning to each time we visit Venice. Advise skip breakfast you'll thank me."

"This place is an absolute gem. Incredible food, atmosphere and hospitality. Owner is incredibly kind and the steaks he is serving on platters are to die for. Located in a really cool area. They don’t take reservations - don’t worry - awesome wine and appetizers can be ordered while you hang out waiting"
Greg St.Claire
"Great atmosphere among all the customers who were sitting by the canal; it can't get better than that!
Unfortunately, everything else was a bit of a disappointment. The food was below average, from the salad to the meat. Desserts were hit and miss since the tiramisu was excellent, but the panacotta wasn't.
Service was insufficient, and I even had to walk inside to pay the bill. At least, everything was affordable."

Cicchetti are often billed as Venice’s answer to tapas, but Venetians tend to resent that analogy – perhaps because of culinary rivalry, or possibly just because it’s an inaccurate comparison. Where and How to Eat Cicchetti in Venice
Just off the Jewish Ghetto of Venice, where for the first time Jews were segregated, you will find the lovely Osteria Al Timon, on the riverbank of a small canal in one of the largest residential areas of Venice, Cannaregio. Al Timon is one of the few remaining true inns in the city – step inside and you will be taken back in time, with old wood beams and wood tables and wine bottles lining the walls everywhere. With only 30 seats inside, it’s always pretty packed, so grab your food and drinks and walks outside, sit down at the few tables that are usually placed by the edge of the water or stand up by the canal just like the locals do.

Hidden Venice: A Bacari Bar Crawl for an Aperitivo like a Local
Although the cicheti here are laden with intriguing flavours and the wine is good, the real draw is the boat ‘terrace’ on the canal outside. There’s a slightly-wider-than-comfortable step from pavement to boat, made all the more challenging when precariously balancing several glasses of prosecco and a plate of cicheti. But a memorable way to finish the evening sitting carefree cross-legged on a wooden boat swaying gently (from the water’s movement or for other reasons).
