Come for breakfast, a predinner aperitivo, or anything in between at this always lively historic coffeehouse—opened in 1775 and taken over by the famous culinary Alajmo family in 2011—in the center of the action on Piazza San Marco. Choose from a wide selection of pastries at breakfast (though the cappuccino and brioche combo is always a classic), pizzas at lunch, and tramezzini all day long, including one with lobster.

One of the storied cafes on Piazza San Marco, Quadri is our favourite, as it’s owned by the Michelin-starred Alajmo brothers. While the renowned restaurant is upstairs, the downstairs (and outdoor) bar has top-notch snacks and sandwiches, as well as drinks. But it’s the view you’re here for – or rather, the view and the live musicians accompanying it.

It comes to you thanks to the Alajmo brothers, Massimiliano and Raffaelle, an award-winning duo of restaurateurs known for the much-lauded Le Calandre in Padua; they also have the more casual Caffe Quadri in Venice, and Caffe Stern in Paris. There’s even a store, In.gredienti, that sells a line of carefully chosen products under the Alajmo name.

After the arrival in 2017 of the Alajmo brothers, chef Max and sommelier Raf, owners of 3 Michelin-starred “Le Calandre” outside of Padua, the food at “Quadri” is considered tops (one Michelin star). Both magnificently decorated Caffès, each with its own orchestra, are on St. Mark’s Square, which Napoleon called “the finest drawing room of Europe”.

Caffe Florian was founded in 1720 to feed Venice’s growing appetite for coffee, imported from the Ottoman Empire by enterprising Venetian merchants, and its gleaming interior of mirrors and stuccoes, of marble and crisp white tablecloths, has played host to luminaries from the art world and high society - Florian was a favourite of the Romantic poets Byron and Shelley, as well as local lothario Casanova - for over three centuries. The live orchestra that serenades guests on the outdoor terrace only adds to the atmosphere.

Caffè Quadri, alongside Caffè Florian, is one of the historic cafes in Venice, made famous over the centuries for its location in Piazza San Marco. Recently revamped in 2018, this institution Caffè Quadri is not only one of the best cafes to get coffee in Venice but also, a great hang out spot to take in the city’s grandeur. Caffè Quadri is modern and chic with an enormous outdoor seating area spilling out into Piazza San Marco, which is what you are paying for.

I love Quadri for so many reasons, but in particular for its gorgeous interiors thanks to the Alajmo family who funded its restoration (and brought on Philippe Starck for some fun) and created a delicious bistrot menu. And I love Quadri’s history: the Quadri family acquired the tiny coffee house in 1775, and became famous for serving Turkish style coffee. Apparently it was the preferred coffee house of the Austrian army during the early 19th century occupation.

The Gran Caffè Quadri, also located in Piazza San Marco, opened in 1775. Its founder was Giorgio Quadri, a merchant who decided, together with his Greek wife Naxina, to open a cafe in Venice after a long stay in Corfu, which at that time belonged to the Republic of Venice. Quadri took over an old wine and coffee shop already well-known in the city, located under the Procuratie Vecchie, and turned it into one of the favorite cafes of the Venetian nobility.

The December 29, 1720 was opened the famous Caffè Florian, still active in Piazza San Marco, under the Procuratie Nuove, and in 1775 opened another famous coffee, the Caffè Quadri.

Very well known is also the Gran Caffe Quadri on the other side. Here you get very good food. In the Quadri there are starters from about 15 euros.

Other cafes with stunning views include Caffè Quadri and Caffè Lavena, both of which are also located in St. Mark’s Square.

It will cost you a little, but a cup of coffee at Florian or at Caffè Quadri in Piazza San Marco is a pleasure.
