The menu offers simple, inexpensive Venetian dishes but skip dessert and head to Venice's favourite ice cream parlour, Gelateria Nico, which is nearby. All the restaurants mentioned here had plenty of vegetarian options and we found the entries in the book Venice: Time for Food (Thomas Cook Publishing, £4.99, timeforfood.com) to be generally trustworthy.

Undoubtedly the most famous gelateria in Venice, a must-visit for tourists and a highly frequented spot by Venetians themselves. A success that stands the test of time - the place was founded in 1937 - continuing to offer an enticing selection in a highly suggestive setting. At the tables of the terrace suspended over the Giudecca canal, you can enjoy a postcard-perfect panorama and savor a choice of ice creams, whether milk-based or made from fresh or dried fruit, all notable for their intensity and palate cleanliness.

We then walked down to the largest canal that divides Dorsodurro from Giudecca, the island where you’ll find Generator Venice. This is where the mammoth cruise ships enter Venice, and it was in their shadow that we basked in the manic glory of Gelateria Nico. Full of white uniform-clad waiters marching from the shop to the canal-front seating, it has the performative, hectic nature of St. Mark’s Square but with better quality, and cheaper, ice cream.

Let them know when you order that you are coeliac and they will scoop your ice cream from a safe tub at the back of the store rather than using the main cabinet. They also have some tables to sit at if you would prefer to have an ice cream sundae and a seat on the waterfront.

While Gelateria Nico is the most highly rated shop in Venice, just about every other vendor in the city will have world-class gelato.

Gelateria Nico is one of the most romantic gelato places in Venice. With an elegant terrace and a beautiful view of sunset on the water, this gelateria is the perfect place to have a break. The gelato itself displays a refined balance between traditional and modern flavors.

Gelateria Nico – Ok, this is the exception from the rule about the attached bar. They have coffee and drinks and stuff, but it’s still a very good gelateria. And if you want to be traditional, apart from the ice cream, you should try the “Gianduiotto a Passeggio”.

Once you cross the Accademia bridge, make sure you go to the Zattere, where Gelateria Nico offers some of the best gelato available. You can try their gianduiotto da passeggio: a swirled masterpiece made with gianduia gelato buried in loads of fresh whipped cream.

Gelateria Nico is accredited by AIC (Italian equivalent of Coeliac UK) and ALL of the ice cream is gluten free. If you want to go for the traditional option, get the gianduiotto, which I can only describe as a block of frozen hazelnut chocolate with whipped cream.

Gelateria Nico: You can’t go to Italy and not have the most delicious cone(s) of gelato. Gelateria Nico is the most authentic gelateria in Venice, but sadly we didn’t get a chance to visit. Instead, we had a good few scoops for delicious gelato from Venchi.

And at Nico’s, overlooking the Giudecca Canal, it’s hard to argue otherwise. Their famous Gianduiotto with whipped cream is more than just dessert – it’s a Venetian rite of passage. Just grab your gelato and find a spot along the Zattere waterfront.

You can’t visit Venice, with kids or without, and without sampling a wide variety of gelaterias. There are dozens if not hundreds of places to taste fantastic gelato but if you need one recommendation to start you off, head to Gelateria Nico.

The sweets I consumed at Gelateria Nico were unbelievably good. I probably won’t ever forget trying their delicious Copa Baileys. Gelateria Nico is a tranquil waterfront ice cream shop with plenty of shaded outdoor seating.

Venice is famous for its gelato, and Gelateria Nico is a great place to get it. They’ve been making it since 1935, and they only use fresh fruit and ingredients.

Go for a run or also a walk early morning alle Zattere and then stop at Nico for a real cappuccino. Ice Cream here is the thing and Gianduia is the one!
