There’s a lot to love about Il Paradiso Perduto, including the massive portions, occasional live jazz, and big space that’s always loud and feels like a party. Be sure to book ahead, as it’s the only way you’ll be able to get a table inside or out by the canal—otherwise, you’ll be stuck standing next to the water, eating your cicchetti, and peering creepily inside like Javert does in Les Miserables. Look for the pasta machine in the window cranking out fresh bigoli, which they use in a dish that comes with so many prawns, scallops, and mussels that you can hardly see the pasta.

You know my favorite source for real local tips and info in Venice is the gondolieri. There’s a wealth of information. Last year, I cornered one while he was waiting for a client, and he insisted that Lajos and I had to get a reservation at a place called Il Paradiso Perduto.

Paradise Lost” is the most happening bar in this neighborhood, crammed with students most nights and featuring the occasional live music set (full concerts every Mon and every first Sun of the month), great cichetti (piled in mountains at the bar) and cheap(ish) wine.
