Though well hidden in a little lane parallel to busy Strada Nuova, it’s easy to spot this eatery once you locate the right street: the locals spilling out into the calle, wine glass and cicheto (snack) in hand, say it all. Whether you perch at the counter (the bar stools are hotly contested) or bag a table in the dark interior, you’ll eat excellent, unfussy fare – seafood and meat – served by a dedicated, enthusiastic team. They have a good wine list, but in my experience the house red and white is very drinkable.

In Venice, there is a special, highly popular category of eateries known as a bacaro, which functions as a bar with snacks. A few also go as far as to serve some simple, more substantial dishes at lunch and dinner. Pocket-sized Ai Promessi Sposi is hidden down a narrow calle, as the best bacari are, with a softly lit interior that is always rammed.

Continue down the Strada Nova, make a left at Campo SS Apostoli and another left on Calle dell’Oca, and you’ll soon arrive at Ai Promessi Sposi (Calle dell’Oca 4367). When I lived in Venice back in 2001, this bar had a plethora of cichetti on view under a glass counter and very inexpensive wine, making it a standard stop on many local’s evening pub crawl. I used to go all the time, but the food was not going to win any awards – I went because I could eat heartily for practically nothing.

The restaurant itself is also reputed to be child-friendly in its attitude towards dining, even offering little distractions like toys or crayons to entertain them.

A two-minute walk from the aforementioned Cà D’Oro alla Vedova, this part-osteria, part-bottega is a good stop-off on your cicheti trail. Promessi Sposi, or ‘the betrothed’, has a broad wooden counter covered with local fish and meat specialities, or there’s a full three-course menu, with a reasonably-priced wine selection. Pasta highlight: spaghetti al nero di seppia — black squid ink spaghetti.

Across the Grand Canal, a couple of blocks off the the main walking street (Strada Nova), not far from the Ca D'Oro vaporetto stop is a restaurant that I really like that also serves cicchetti during lunchtime and into the late afternoon, Osteria Al Promessi Sposi. Food is fantastic, great menu and wonderful veggie cicchetti choices.

Osteria Ai Promessi Sposi is a charming restaurant located near the Rialto Bridge. They offer a variety of traditional Venetian dishes, such as sarde in saor (marinated sardines) and baccalà (salt cod), as well as a selection of pizzas. The restaurant has a rustic, cozy atmosphere, with a small courtyard for outdoor dining.

Getting a real Venetian experience while in Venice is not the easiest part of being in the magical city on the water. But you’ll be getting close to tasting what the real Venice tastes like at the Bottega ai Promessi Sposi. It is a cozy restaurant where you can dig in to local dishes.

The name of the restaurant translates to “Restaurant to the Betrothed”. When I was there, I never saw anyone proposing, but I assume it must happen. Osteria is the name given to a place that’s laid back, without the pomp of a restaurant—just good ol’ food.

Osteria Ai Promessi Sposi was recommended to me by a local from whom I rented an apartment. He said this is a staple for his Venetian family and once I got a closer look, I understood why. The menu is often changing, catering to what is seasonal.

Osteria Da Carla – (Pictured above) If you’re near Piazza San Marco around lunchtime, this little hidden gem is perfect for a quick lunch (or a longer lunch if you want to be fancy) and isolated from the hoards crowding the square.

Osteria Ai Promessi Sposi – fish or seafood pasta for under €15 and it tasted darn good. I dined at this place at lunchtime on one of my large lunch days. It’s a traditional restaurant with an ever-changing menu of the day.
