I had wanted to get a table at Osteria alle testiere (Calle del Mondo Novo, 5801, 30122 Venezia) as I had read some wonderful things about the food there and is also a favourite haunt by many including Polpo owner, Russel Norman. Unfortunately I wasn’t aware that a booking was needed to be made a few weeks in advance, but I must stick in a reminder for next time!

Right up there with Antiche Carampane and Alle Testiere, however, we would argue that the energy level and feel are superior at the other two. Further, prices here are at least 10-20% higher than the other restaurants. However, this is the best option for dining on a Sunday or Monday, when the other top two are closed (Al Covo is closed Tuesday and Wednesday).

Small cosy restaurant with just nine tables is the perfect for dinner à deux and must be booked months in advance. The secret of Alla Testiere, is the blend of skill and enthusiasm that Bruno and Luca bring to the restaurant. The menu is clever and delicate but essentially Venetian and Luca really knows his wines.

Thank whatever God you believe in if you can get a reservation at this joint reserved for Italy’s elevated bon vivants. It’s a restaurant worth wading through the most crowded and humid of days in Italy’s sunken city. The food is impeccably done and the waitstaff knows everything you could ask about each meal.

If you like seafood: Osteria alle Testerie is highly regarded and my sister and her husband (fairly serious “foodies” loved it. We could not get in although I tried for reservations 2 weeks ahead.

In the alleys narrow streets, we recommend sampling Venetian specialities in one of the restaurants lining the small canals, such as Osteria alle Testiere, renowned for its refined dishes.
