Reviews Summary
Osteria alle Testiere is celebrated for its exceptional, ultra-fresh seafood and refined Venetian cuisine. Diners consistently praise the quality of ingredients, the light and balanced flavors, and the attentive, warm service. The intimate setting contributes to a memorable dining experience, though its small size necessitates booking well in advance.
"A very popular and rather famous Osteria that used to not even have an electronic reservation system. Alas, times have changed ))
The food is quite expensive but if you are into very fresh seafood, it is one of the better places to go enjoy the catch of the day.
The scallops were nice with a bit of citrus and micro green fanciness. The razor clams were impeccable and I love ordering them here. Bo hole was very nice and classy. The gnocchi had a bit too much cinnamon for me but very tasty nonetheless. The St Jacques fresh and simple. The pistachio cake excellent and homey, the way I prefer it.
It’s a tiny place and you should not plan to easily get a table here. I would come here with a partner and never with kids but I’m sure kids will feel fine here as well.
Centrally located, beautiful and honest place that I quite enjoy year after year."

"We booked a table for lunch a couple of months before our trip to Venice. The food here is amazing. Delicious and fresh. You can't go wrong with any of the items on the menu. Tuna tataki was wonderful as were all of our mains. It's a small place which is why it's booked out well in advance. If you like your seafood, then definitely come here. It's not cheap but it's worth it."

"We were recommended Osteria alle Testiere by friends who visit often, and it was the highlight of our trip to Venice & Verona. The food was outstanding and the hospitality from Luca and his team was warm and welcoming. We enjoyed a leisurely lunch trying lots of local seafood (including oysters, clams, scallops, fish, pasta alongside exceptional veg) with excellent wine, followed by a tiramisu and coffee. Their menu changes daily based on the best ingredients available and so they say that because of this, all of their dishes are recommended - we’d have to agree! This is a gem of a restaurant. To ensure you don’t miss out, we’d highly recommend booking well in advance due to the small restaurant size."

Restaurants in Venice
The name is a reference to the old headboards that adorn the walls of this tiny, informal restaurant, but the food (not the decor) is undoubtedly the focus. Local foodies consider this one of the most refined eateries in the city thanks to chef Bruno Gavagnin's gently creative take on classic Venetian fish dishes; the chef's artistry seldom draws attention to itself, but simply reveals new dimensions of familiar fare, creating dishes that stand out for their lightness and balance. A classic black risotto of cuttlefish, for example, is surrounded by a brilliant coulis of mild yellow peppers; tiny potato gnocchi are paired with tender newborn squid.
The 36 best restaurants in Venice
A single elegant dining room is the venue for this ever-popular seafood restaurant where chef Bruno and sommelier Luca are an excellent double act. The former bases his daily creations on what was good and fresh in the fish market that morning, adding bursts of flavour without coming over all fusion – as in his swordfish ravioli with ricotta and aubergine purée. Vegetables are straight out of the ground at the Osti in Orto project created by a group of restaurateurs on the lagoon island of Sant’Erasmo.

Alle Testerie's website lays it out clearly: "Daily menu depends on availability of fresh fish at the market." Don’t return to this smart, diminutive seafood restaurant, which is tucked away on a Castello backstreet, expecting to eat that delicious thing you had last time. But do go knowing that everything will be just-caught-fresh. Deceptively simple and always exquisite, the daily seafood dishes from chef and co-founder Bruno Gavagnin are always a delight.

Speaking of the seven 1-starred star restaurants downtown, don’t miss “Osteria alle Testiere”, the 20-seat gem decorated with testiere or headboards, also a favorite with locals, where the chef Bruno Gavagnin changes his menu daily depending on what’s available at La Pescheria or local fish market, or “Da Fiore”, where the self-effacing chef Mara Zanetti, who inherited her passion for cooking from her caterer paternal grandmother, also changes her menu daily. Both have exceptional wine lists. The others are “Dopolavoro”, “Il Ridotto”, “Met” in the Metropole Hotel, “Oro” in the Belmond Hotel Cipriani (on the Giuddecca), and 2018 newcomer Enrico Bartolini’s elegant “Glam”.

Part of the “Osti in Orto” project, through which small restaurants across the islands collaborate to cultivate and share fresh produce on a small farm on the satellite island of Sant’Erasmo (other members include Al Covo and Alla Bomba), Chef Luca changes the menu daily, based on the farm’s harvest and local market availability. With a seafood menu that changes daily and an amazing wine list of local and multi-regional Italian whites, this would have to be one of the most enjoyable places to dine in Venice. It’s a humble little trattoria a few hundred metres from Piazza San Marco that seats about 24, but what it lacks in space it more than makes up for in flavour. Right up there with Antiche Carampane and Alle Testiere, however, we would argue that the energy level and feel are superior at the other two. Further, prices here are at least 10-20% higher than the other restaurants. However, this is the best option for dining on a Sunday or Monday, when the other top two are closed (Al Covo is closed Tuesday and Wednesday).
